Default Ignition fuse keeps blowing!

This isn't for a subie but that's ok.

I'm working on my cousins 97 GST. All i was doing was putting a boost gauge in it. Well, I couldn't find a suitable place to tap for 12V ignition so I went to the ignition wire off the ignition switch. I know that sounds sketchy but the previous owner had tapped it b4 so I thought I would use it too. Well, he started the car fine and then shut it off. After 5 min he started it again and it shut off by itself after a couple seconds.

I check the ignition fuse and it was blown! So...I went ahead and removed the boost gauge and returned everything back to stock and it still blows the fuse. When I ran the wiring from the top of the dash to the bottom I used a wire hanger so I thought that I ripped up some wires while shoving it down there. So I ripped the dash out! LMAO. But everything looks good. I even cut the ignition wire and wired it directly to the fuse box in the engine bay. It still blows! I then took out every single fuse and relay and even took the fuse box out from inside the car. It still blows! What's going on here? Am I missing something?

And to clarify. There is the ACC, ON, and STR on the ignition. You can put it in ACC mode and turn the radio/lights on fine. But as soon as you turn it to ON it blows. You can't even try starting it b/c it blows by then.

Let me know if you guys have any ideas b/c I'm burnt out and have no clue.

Thanks

You may have pinched a power wire somewhere while working on the install. The trouble may be under the hood rather than the dash. Go over any work you did there to see if you can find a pinched wire. I suggest you get the wiring diagram for the vehicle so you can see where the power for that lead ties to if you can't locate the trouble by looking over things. Your locale library may have the service info available.

never--EVER-EVER tap the ignition wiring for power

Nope.

The Electrical & Lighting forum on NASIOC is for technical discussion about any Electronics/Lighting related to any Subaru
Non-Subaru discussion goes to OT or use a forum specific to that make.
