Default Blew my 99 Legacy Motor, What swaps are easy?

Hey guys, I'm kinda new around here. I've been driving a 99 Legacy L wagon (5 spd) for about 2 years and all of a sudden the cam shaft snapped and wreaked the motor.

All the guys I've talked to so far said that rebuilding the motor was a bust and that I should just replace it (feel free to adjust that opinion).

Anyway, I know that similar year motors should fit pretty easily. Turbo motors will require a modification to the front cross member to clear the charge tubes, but beyond that I'm kinda lost.

I know that the 99 is an OBD2 car. What other years are also OBD2? I'd rather not rewire the whole car unless the conversion is really easy. What about motor mounts? Do most EJ's use the same mount points? Thanks!

1995 Legacy Wagon


1996 and up is OBD II, except for the Legacy which started OBD II in 1995.
A turbo motor swap will require a lot of wiring, yes.
Easiest swap is another EJ22, but you can also swap in a SOHC EJ25 fairly easily for more power. Yes, the EJ motors have the same mount points.
