Question Subaru or not????

Hello to all.

I been to few meets with subarus like the 4/6 BBQ meet and I got intreasted in a subaru. My question is... since i know nothing about it......

I want a 98 impreza 2.5RS 5spd with like 80K miles in good shape

1-IS it reliable? (I drive a maxima that has 118K miles and still going strong) I want a car that can take some abuse and still run good as the miles pile up over 100K miles. I chose maxima cause it gave me the speed and reliablity all at once. So i want the subaru to do the same.

2-MY98 result was broken ring lands and excessive piston slap, not to mention decreased durability under "modified" applications ????What doeas that mean???????? Should I avoid 98??

3-what problems did the 2.5RS have and which years are the best to buy but I can only afford 98 .

4-Will it be hard to find MY98 2.5RS?

5-Is it worth switching from a maxima to subaru. Im not in any hurry. I am planning to keep a max unless I can sell it and find a suby real quick.

Thank you for the input. BTW who knows Hogan from the org here???

I would go for a 2000-2001 since you don't have a MAF to deal with which may hinder if you want an intake. as far as reliability I haven't had any issues with my 99 a friend of mine has a 98 legacy and AFAIK has no problems. it may be hard to find a 98 I had a hard time finding any 2.5RS but that was before the WRX came out took me about 1 month. Good luck

The 2000 + 2001 also come with a LSD in the rear which is nice.

Talking owner testimonial

i have a MY98 RS and i love it. i didn't like the front bumper. that was my biggest complaint. i've now updated it with a V5 bumper and rear wing. mechanically speaking, there is no real advantage with the 98. some say the heads have a greater theoretical power potential but no one has tested that yet. the MAF is also really easy to modify with; the only drawback is that it's a bit harder to find the products to do so with.

the biggest mechanical drawbacks are:
1.LSD's-unfortunately, subaru only supplied viscous LSD's which are helpful with the stock HP but they don't hold up so well under higher HP ratings.
2.MY00-01 MAP sensors-the biggest bummer here is that this version was produced in the greatest number so it has the greatest number of upgrade options. careful, not a whole lot of space left on the RS bandwagon, either
3.lack of a sedan option-no way of getting around this, really.

this above list is just off the top of my head and is only my opinion. some would mention the SOHC's moderately higher power (like one HP IIRC) and stronger bottom end. not a big deal in my opinion because they also have to deal with a rev limiter that cuts in too early and the dreaded "flat spot" in the power band. i have neither problem in my car. the transmission in later cars have six bolts instead of four. subaru claims that this made the bottom end stronger and it's hard to argue-more bolts=more strength. duh. however, i've never heard of any MY98 RS owner complaining that they've sheared their motor from their tranny at the bellhousing. yet.

other problems i'm not aware of. i really like my car. i think the interior cloth patterns are the best. oh, that reminds me of one more complaint. the MY98 RS came with the "accordian" style shifter boot, ala L models. super lame! that must be changed prior to driving it. other than that, i can't really think of anything i don't like about my car. i love it. hope this helps.
