Default My 18g wagon...

I had my car tuned by Doug from Topspeed while he made a trip down to Sojax in Jacksonville. My tmic was holding me back a little. Doug tried hard to break the 300hp mark, but it was just heat soaking like crazy. I have to say I was pleased for all of about a day, but yet again the bug for more power has crept into my brain.

Final results were... 299.1whp 271.1wtq

Modlist...

Blouch TD05 18g^7cm
DW 750cc
TurboXS tmic
Walbro 255
K&N drop in filter
Stromung catless downpipe
Stromung catless midpipe
Cobb catback
Grimmspeed catless uppipe
Cobb APv2

Boost was set to 18psi, I'm still on the stock tranny. So I went a little conservative, but a new tranny is in the works.
So I'd like to ask for any advice for more power... Keep in mind this is my daily driver, never see's track time and I'd like to keep it on 93 pump gas. Eventually I might go rotated, but for now I want to make the most of what I've got. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Can you elaborate on how your TMIC was holding you back? I have the same TMIC and havn't had any problems making over 300.

I would definitely run meth. With the same setup tuned without meth and tuned with it ended up being around a 40whp difference, granted the tune without meth was pretty shoddy, it adds a nice kick in the pants.

Well the cooling at Sojax consisted of one small blower, ice and water spray. So it wasn't really getting reliable cooling. But after looking at the APS and Spearco tmic's, mine looks way small. Also this was on a DynoPack.

I've tried looking at what boost levels are normally at with 18g's but searching doesn't yield a whole lot specifically. What's still considered a relative safe level?

As for meth I'm still undecided. I've looked and read for hours and hours about safety, reliability and all that, but the idea of another tank to fill and watch isn't sold on me yet.

^when I was tuned on my 02 WRX with a similar turbo (blouch 18g 8cm^2) my boost was set at 20psi. And that was with the Hyperflow TMIC which I think is the same as the TurboXS. TMIC must have been heat soaked to shiet. Just go with a FMIC

i run 23 tapering to 21 on my 20g, on stock 205. i say turn it up to 20-21 this is alot better efficiency range for the turbo. you could run water injection that would keep it cooler, and would not really require much difference in the tune, and if you ever felt like it, add a little bit of meth in there and you are good to go

i see you are still running the stock intake. that is what's more than likely holding you back, that 18g needs to breath!

^^^ Really? I was told by Doug to keep the stock box. I've heard many a horror stories related to shorty intakes. Any suggestions?

I was thinking the same thing...

Just try an intake, and see if your car wakes up a bit.

About your intercooler... My friends car, with a smaller turbo, at 22-23psi is making 328hp and 340ftlbs on pump, with only an STI TMIC, and he used to have a TXS TMIC. I'm thinking the IC isn't the restriction.

I'm able to pick up an APS tmic for cost, so I'm thinking of trying that. It's huge compared to the TurboXS. As for intakes, would a cai or one more like the cobb be better? Also a new inlet will be going on soon.

Thanks for the replys so far.

Just because you can get a tmic with a larger surface area, doesn't mean you will be doing much good. What splitter/shroud are you using? My txs tmic is still a little larger than the sti shroud, and anything larger would just be more area without air flowing through it...

I say just take a few days of researching different things before you just start buying parts.

If heat soak is your problem, then why is going FMIC not being considered? Am I the only one that thinks the benefits of a FMIC (VERY rare heatsoak), outweighs the shortcomings (lose a few hundred rpm in spool)? Just my 2 cents..

^^I didn't say that in my post, but I agree. The next logical step in my mind from txs tmic is a good fmic...

350hp 340 tq on Topspeed's DynoJet which reads much lower than a Dynapack like you were tuned on.

I have considered going with a fmic, spool was my only concern I guess. I know with a good tune I shouldn't see too much more lag, but I'll admit, I'm a spool sissy...

And I've done alot of research and reading for a long time, I'm just so back and forth sometimes. Believe me I've worn that search button up top to death.

i like the tmic for the stealthness, you should be making more on a high reading dyno like that, heck you should be getting close if not hitting 300 on a mustang dyno. but i say get a new turbo inlet, i have a aps inlet, and i love it. on a wrx it can be put in without the intake coming off, but the coupler is a little of a pain. i have kept the stock box though
