Jari-Matti Latvala has secured the early lead on Rally d'Italia Sardegna after setting the pace on two of the opening three stages on the Mediterranean island.

Benefitting from his position on the road, the BP Ford Abu Dhabi driver set the pace on the opening test of the morning and then repeated the feat on the final stage of the loop to return to service with a lead of 14.6secs at the head of the field.

“Our times have been getting better, so it's looking quite good,” he said. “I'm not totally happy with the set-up yet, so we'll be looking at that back in service.”

Latvala's lead is over Sebastien Loeb, who moved up to second on the final stage of the morning ahead of the second Ford of Mikko Hirvonen, with the Frenchman admitting he was doing everything he could to stay in touch out front having been forced to act as road-sweeper during the morning.

Hirvonen had been due to start the event running third on the road, but ended up running second behind Loeb after Dani Sordo was late starting stage one – incurring a 30 second penalty and dropping behind Hirvonen in the running order. Sordo claimed that the issue was down to the turbo on his C4 WRC although he was still able to go on and post the third quickest time on SS1 and went quickest on SS2.

“It looks like Citroen are doing the same trick as they did in New Zealand last year,” Hirvonen said during the morning, “but that's the name of the game I suppose.”

wonder how todays strategy is gonna play out on tomorrow stages...the big question is the pressure gonna cause Jarri to crack? i predict Loeb starts chipping away at the splits like always...hes toying with them again

its nice to see Jarri and Mikko 1&2 and even if Loeb is sandbagging /toying with them he still has the 43secs to make up

Rally Stuff

The repeat run over the flowing Crastazza stage completed the six-stage schedule of Rally Sardinia's opening day, and Jari-Matti Latvala held the lead while teammate Mikko Hirvonen was truly frustrated with his own performance.

The name of the game at this point is to avoid being the first car on the road tomorrow, and therefore being tasked with sweeping aside the top layer of gravel ahead of the other competitors. Being fastest is therefore not necessarily the best option, and carefully calculating the amount of speed one should lose without however falling too back behind in the gaps is the art.

At this game, Sebastien Loeb caught out an angrily surprised Mikko Hirvonen: dropping a massive 25 seconds during this run, the Citroen driver now finds himself behind his rival in third position overall. However, by his comments, the Frenchman might have been expecting to be further back as he commented that he was "not so happy" with his position.

Not realizing that Loeb had dropped much more time than he expected, Hirvonen's voluntary 17-second loss was insufficient to prevent the Finn from being the second car to sweep the gravel on Saturday – ahead of Loeb.

"You can't do it much more wrong than I did now," angrily stated a frustrated Hirvonen, aware that his chances of a rally victory might be slipping away. "Completely, completely my mistake."

Meanwhile, his teammate Jari-Matti Latvala opted to stay away from tactics and push forward to maintain his lead. The Finn's result of 17:57.0 gave him the stage win, as well as the promise of a difficult day tomorrow since he will now have to open the stages.

"It is a slightly bad move," Latvala acknowledged. "But if you want to win you have to be able to drive as the first car on the road. It's not an easy situation, tomorrow will be a hard day for me."

Jari-Matti Latvala has retained his lead following the morning loop of day two on Rally d'Italia Sardinia, with the disadvantage of running first on the road not appearing as apparent as expected.

The BP Ford Abu Dhabi driver went into the second day leading team-mate Mikko Hirvonen by just under 40 seconds, but was able to minimise his losses through the three morning stages – including the first run through the longest test of the event – to head back to service with a lead of 27 seconds.

"I drove as well as I could in those conditions and was expecting to lose more time," he said. "My confidence is good and I think I need to take a 20-25sec lead into tomorrow if I am to have a chance to win.

“The last two stages had a shiny surface and were extremely slippery. It was hard to judge the right braking points. This afternoon should be better, but it will still be more difficult for me than for the guys behind."

Having admitted he had made a mistake in not slowing enough on the final stage of day one, thus moving ahead of Sebastien Loeb in the standings, Hirvonen was quickest through the first stage of the morning to extend his advantage over Loeb but then saw the Frenchman go quickest on both SS8 and SS9. Hirvonen's challenge wasn't helped by the fact that he encountered two groups of wild horses on stage eight – forcing him to slow.

Loeb's stage times should have seen him move into second place, but he was a minute late starting the final stage of the morning after stopping to bleed the brakes on his C4 WRC. As a result, he picked up a ten second penalty and remains third – 7.5secs behind Hirvonen going into the afternoon loop.

“We had a brake problem at the end of the second stage and had to bleed the brakes, so we were a little late checking in to stage nine,” he said. “I intend to keep pushing this afternoon and we'll see what we can do.”

The fight for honours on Rally d'Italia Sardinia looks set to be an all-Ford affair heading into the final day after Jari-Matti Latvala successfully held his lead through Saturday's six stages in the Meditteranean.

The young Finn went into the day leading team-mate Mikko Hirvonen by just under 40 seconds, but faced the prospect of sweeping the road for the cars behind.

However, Latvala proved more than capable of fighting from the front to remain in the lead, although his advantage over Hirvonen now lies at less than ten second after his countryman closed in on the repeat run through the three stages that made up the day's action.

Hirvonen had looked set to battle for position throughout the day with championship leader Sebastien Loeb, with a penalty for starting stage nine a minute late being the only thing preventing the Frenchman from moving into second place during the morning.

However, on the second stage of the afternoon, Loeb's fortunes took a turn for the worse when he had to stop and change a puncture on stage eleven and dropped just over a minute. As a result, the Frenchman has now slipped to fourth place, but is expected to take third from Petter Solberg during the final day – with the Norwegian just 2.2 seconds ahead at the wheel of his Citroen Xsara.
