Default MY00-01 2.5RS or MY02 2.5RS, to buy, or not to buy, that is the question....

I've been really pondering this question for the past two weeks. I've been wanting a 2.5 RS for quite some time and it all came down to the 2000-2001's and the 2002's. Now here's the lowdown.

2000-2001:
-Sold in my area for around $14,000-$18,000
-Most of them have at least 30-50k, if not more
-Most of them are coupes
-They have rear LSD's
-They have sunroofs
-The aftermarket support and potential is tremendous!
-I like the body style a lot.

2002:
-Someone is going to sell one to me for $15,000
-It has 10-15k on the odometer, which is really good.
-I've sat in two WRX's and the interior's not that much different. I absolutely loved the interior. Very roomy and the seats can hold very well.
-The chassis is more rigid since it lacks a sunroof.
-I like 4 doors since I don't have to tilt any seats forward or have any passengers bitch about room in the rear.
-Might be mistaken for a WRX for people who don't realize or check the vent missing from the hood and the obvious rear badge that says "2.5RS".
-The bastard child of the MY02's

The real lowdown:
-I'm thinking about spending roughly $15k the most, less would be great.
-I "would" like a 4-door RS, but I can live with a coupe.
-I'd want a car with a sunroof for once, but I guess I can live without one since the current car I'm driving (92 Integra RS), doesn't have one.
-The majority of the upgrades I'd do anyway would be suspension (real coilovers, sway bars, etc), wheels (17's), and tires (Falken Azenis). Maybe some OEM body kit. Most likely it'll be wingless. Possibly a WRX USDM EJ20 swap on whatever RS I might get down the line a few years after I've owned the car, well, if I "need" that much power anyway. That is, if I can get a hold of an EJ20 around here in the first place.
-Need something with great bucket seats like the WRX seats, otherwise, I'm gonna have to spend $1,500 for a pair of Recaro SRD's or a pair of Sparco Torinos.
-I only put 4-5k on the odometer per year on a car since most of the places I go to here in Northern California is no more than an hour away like San Francisco, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Hayward, etc.
-I'm looking for one with reasonable miles.
-The car will be daily driven and occassionally road raced or cruising the hills and mountain passes with my buddies on weekends.

I can't decide whether I should go with the 2002 RS that the dude is selling or wait for a 2000-2001. As for the WRX EJ20 swap, yea, most people would say, "Why not just get a WRX instead?" Well, I barely make $500 a month, so there's no way in hell I could pay for a WRX. I'd like to hear your input on my situation. Please no silly or unreasonable suggestions. =/ Thanks in advance!

In case you guys are wondering, I still drive a 92 Integra RS w/ a dying automatic transmission, some ghetto cut Eibach Sportlines that the previous jackass who owned the car put on along with a set of Tokicos, which handles like crap, too soft to my standards, and torque that's next to nothing. So I'm gonna get a loan approved pretty soon as soon as I figure out which car I want. Either way, it'll be a major step up.

You barely make $500/month and you are looking to buy a ~$15k car and then drop $5k+ more into it???

IMHO, get the 1st generation RS. In like 2006, the Impreza will change shape and then you can look for options then.

You can start working on the 1st generation Impreza first and get to know how it feels like. Plus it's lighter than the new one.

It' very true that the new one has a much better chassis.

Try hard to find a 1st gen. 4 Door RS. If not, you can always get a '99-'01 4 door Impreza L and work on that for a project.

Just my .02 cents....(how did i add .02 cents onto the web? what is this anyway?)

Um....who said I'm going to stay at that job forever? I was speaking as far future plans go. It's not like I'm buying EVERYTHING at once. It's a slow build up anyway. There's many factors that might pop up years from now on how much of a budget I'd have to use. Also, keep in mind that I'm going to talk with the loan agent and see how low of a monthly payment I can manage. Like I said, there's still many financial factors. Sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I wanted to avoid typing up my life story for you guys.

I personally prefer the look of the '02 RS over the prior models. Apparently I'm in the minority. I've had my '02 since January and have been very pleased with the car.

It is a bit unfortunate that the '02 doesn't have a sunroof option but living in Kansas it seems that it's either too cold to open it up or it's too darn hot. I've had several cars with sunroofs in the past and really never used them much.

Having 4 doors was important to me. It seems I have to drive the mother-in-law and sister-in-law around more and more and it's sooooooo much easier with a 4 door.

The lower mileage of the '02 would be a real plus in my book. Lots more miles before you have to think about timing belts and the like. I prefer the interior on the '02 model as well. And lets face it. We spend a LOT of time looking at the interior of the car.

I couldn't quite tell from your post for sure but you do know that the seats in the '02 RS are the same as the WRX except for the color of the center (blue in the WRX, black in the RS)?

Yea, I was aware the actual construction of the seats are the same as the WRX. That was a major selling point for me for the '02 after I've sat in two WRX's. I assumed it was essentially the same stuff inside without the Momo labeling anyway. I've read threads concerning "2.5RS vs. WRX, does it justify the extra cost?", so I've acquired "some" information about the MY02. I've combed around this board for photos of the MY98-MY01 as well as lists of modifications. I also did "some" research on what parts are available for each car. Essentially, the suspension components for a WRX would fit the MY02 2.5RS without any complications or impatibility issues whatsoever. However, if I wanted to do anything more than suspension work, such as a few bolt-ons, the MY99-MY01's SOHC engine has more parts whereas the MY02 2.5RS (specifically) still has parts that are still under development. Aside from the mileage, I do like having a sunroof, a rear LSD (like some coffee with your donuts anyone?), a sunroof (never had one before), and a body style that I like more. I guess I'll have to see how the car runs first and how well kept they are before deciding. I'm leaning towards the MY00-MY01 then. Thanks for the help. Any further advice and input would be great.

I found a 2001 silverstone metallic coupe with 16k for $13,900, however, it has a 4EAT. I might just check it out for a test drive.

I own and love a 2001 RS coupe. That said, if I were in your position I would get the '02. You may see even bigger aftermarket support, as alot of WRX parts will work. Also, it is a newer car, less miles, will be worth more as a trade later on. I think that option will overall give you the best value .
