Default Used 20g or FP HTA68?

Im at the point where my VF39 and stock fuel system is almost out of steam. I eventually want to get a 30R or 35R and get into the mid 400whp range with forged pistons. But this is pretty far away right now. like 3 or 4 years. so Id like to do a power upgrade that will bring me into the 340-370whp range, to last me till then. (will be happy anywhere in there)

I have been looking at the FP HTA 68 as a possibility but Ive looked into it and there arent enough solid results out there yet for me to buy with total confidence (ie, i dont want to spend $850 for a measly 10whp) FP claims its good for 340-360whp on an sti. but i have some doubts after reading some stuff. this turbo only costs $850 so if it is good for 350whp, then its kind of a bargin.

Now my other idea is to buy a used 20g of some type for a similar price as I know they are well capable of mid 300s. Id even be willing to buy one that needs a rebuild and give it to Blouch, A1320, or Precision.

What do you all think I should do and what should I be watching out for. Also, for 20Gs what company's products should I stay away from? and what types of flaws are too bad to be worth rebuilding?

Thanks all

Why dont you wait for more solid and consistent information on the HTA68 before asking a bunch of people here that dont know much more than you on a basically new and unproven turbo...

How about looking at all the other proven options out there, instead of limiting yourself to those two choices as well? 18g, 20g, green, ATP, APS, etc... You have a HP goal stated, now find a turbo that can achieve it.

for a 2.5L it seems that a good range for you would be the 20g, or Dom1/FP green. side note, with meth you could push a dom1 very close to your goal of mid 400s... not quite 30R standings, but would spool faster and the meth would greatly increase the top end.

I agree, love my FP Green for a daily driver. Full boost at 3300 and peak torque at 3800 on pump gas.

+1 for the 20G

I called FP to talk to them about the HTA68 because according to their website it flows more than the 20G (HTA68-47lb/min vs. 20G-44lb/min) . However, the representative I spoke with said that it does not flow more than a 20G and should be considered between an 18G and 20G, with spool characteristics of a 16G

I'm feeling ya on the area you're looking to go. Still rockin the stock vf39, and wishing i could make some gains like my old WRX did going from td04 to vf34 setup. The HTA68 sounds like exactly what i'm after. I'd like to get my car to around 350whp/400wtq or at least in the general neighborhood (falling 20 or 30 short still wouldn't bother be if it ran well and pulled strong). I also want minimum spool (stock or better), and plan on keeping a TMIC (currently a V7).
Thats all the power i think i'd ever want from it. Just been trying to settle on a turbo that does that well. I was pretty set on having to use a small bolt on GT30 to keep the spool down, but those are far pricier than the HTA68, and it seems to fit right into that sweet spot of producing some nice mid>top end gains without sacrificing spool. I guess time will tell.

Ya, unless I see some real good results in the next couple weeks, im probly going 20g, just cuz it has proven to easily make the power I want.

As far as specifics, i been looking around. I think im feeling an FP 20g cuz it comes way better equipped than the blouch and for cheaper too. I dont really think I need a green, cuz i never run 100 octane, so the difference is small. but if i find a deal on one i'll do it. Im still looking around used, but im selling some old stuff and if I make enough, i may just buy a new FP 20g. but it all depends on money and what deals come up.

I think the numbers are starting to POP at the HTA68 thread... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...1763106&page=6

Both of them with the usual supporting mods (Header/turboback/intake/fuel pump+ inj.). The 05 STi made 364WHP and 405 lb/ft of torque at 21 psi (peak). The 06 STi made 357WHP and 386 lb/ft of torque @ 20 psi (peak). Both of these were done on 93 oct gas.

From what Miguel said... the turbo opens just as fast as a VF39/43 but it holds the power better (up to 6,700-6,900 rpm) He said it's great for a daily driver.

Just for reference... Miguel tunes Roly's 04 STi... which holds the stock turbo record (11.71 @ 116 with 350WHP) and also the DOM 3 record (10.88 @ 126 with 433WHP). So this dyno reads the way it should.

a TD06 20G 8cm housing with an ewg is always a solid performer.

yes, i read that last bit you quoted in its thread, and i was thinking: hmm... spool like stock, 350hp/400tq? exactly what i want. I'm sure with some other supporting mods, i could make 80-90% of this power on my vf39, but it is at 98k miles, and i'd also rather not do my best, then come up 20% short of my goal area or something. better to pay for 1 tune and 1 tune only.
