Default Moving to SF - Where should I look for an apartment?

So I've got a promising job interview coming up in Palo Alto in a few weeks and I'm heading up to SF to get a feel for life there. I'm going to do some apartment hunting and I want to get some local opinions of where an overall nice place to live might be. My fiancee and I probably won't be making a ton of money at first and we generally want to keep our living expenses on the lower side (for the bay area).

Our criteria are basically:

1: easily BART accessible
2: decent/cheap/divey restaurants w/in walking distance
3: not super pricey but not crime ridden either

Any suggestions?

And if anyone knows of some companies looking to hire an econ grad from U Mich, PM me. Don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

Well, the Mission has been largely changed in terms of cleaned up and renovated as in near Mission Dolores Park. If you do want that touristy experience though, the North Beach would work but may be a lil pricy. Near the ballpark and (South of Market Area) SOMA is another good alternative in terms of the options you have.

Assuming you'll be looking for a job in the SF financial district, there's public transportation all around (BART, Muni). If you're open to living away from the City, and commuting in, Alameda is a great little town with more affordable housing than SF. The Transbay Bus goes from Alameda to SF, and they offer monthly passes.

If in the City, areas that are not too shady and somewhat affordable that I know of are SoMa, and TenderNob. Both are bordered by high crime areas though.

Do you know what city you will be working at exactly? Palo Alto or SF??

It is a renter's market right now, so you should be able to find decent housing in surrounding cities in the Bay Area. Check Craigslist.

Good luck
