Unhappy 2.2 - 2.5 swap 97 impreza wagon A LITTLE HELP PLEASE.......

I am looking for information on swapping our old, and getting tired (130,000 mi and sounding even more like a tractor than usual every day) for a 2.5 .

I don't know the differences between the different 2.5's either, my thought was to maybe just swap in a 2.5 out of a legacy (sohc)? hoping that that would be the easiest.

Is the legacy motor any better?

What would I have to change? I did a search and could find only limited info.

From what I could see it looked like the trans was the same and I would use the 2.5 ECU and injectors. Is the harness the same?
Is the clutch the same? (I just put in a new clutch).

A RS motor would be great, but I think it may be out of my price range, whats the difference in HP ?

Basically I'm looking for a reliable, fairly simple swap upgrade with no check engine lights, oh and more torque.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

the RS and legacy 2.5L motors are the same engine.

try checking out www.fakewrx.com for info on the swap. not the most efficient method, but definitely the easiest.

Thanks for the link Adam, but that was a 1.8 to 2.5 swap in an early car. It did have some usefull info in it though.

Anyone know about the 2.2 to 2.5 swap in a later (97) car ?

I know there are a couple of guys on here that have done a 2.2L turbo mod in their RS's and have great results...I'm sure that there are ppl that have had good results in their L's

yeah, but it shouldn't be that much different. just giving you a starting point, since no one swaps 2.5's into anything else once they're out. i would think the biggest issue would be the clutch assembly, but i think your car already has the newer hydraulic setup, no?

at least your 2.2 ECU has knock sensors so the thing won't be clattering like a sherman tank until it warms up.

Am I just stupid here or what? I thought this swap would be good bang for the buck, considering I have to pull the motor anyway... Is this a stupid idea? It seems no one has done this... Anyone else with Ideas or opinions on this?
