Arrow Project WRX (UK)

Well I haven't had a Scooby project for a while so time for a new one.

If you don't know me heres a bit of background info - my first car was a Turbo 2000 that looked like this

I decided to make it unique so it looked like this when I'd finished!

Build thread can be found HERE

I sold that in 2012 and have been wanting another Impreza ever since.

I went out this January and bought this

I want to keep this standard so no project here, just use, maintain and enjoy.

Onto the project car.

There was an 03 plate WRX I passed everyday that was just stood up. Turns out my mate knows the owner so after a few text messages etc a deal was struck and I bought the car!! The owner even trailered it to mine FOC :thumb::thumb:

Plans are low and wide with a 'less is more' attitude to the styling with some subtle mods similar to my classic!! This, like my classic build, will not be a big budget build and where I can mods will be done by myself.

The car - she's had a small engine fire and has no engine or gearbox but other than that she's complete - so she's a perfect project for me! Sat on 19" alloys (not staying) and coil overs too, bonus!!

So home she went and into the garage

She looks a little sorry for herself atm!!

First job was to strip the front to remove the toasted parts!!

Oh and de-spoliered

Which brings me up to where I am now.

More soon!!

Cheers guys

Few little fiddly jobs done today.

Bonnet off and bay cleaned up a bit

Wings and bumper re-fitted ready for realigning the new bonnet

Few snapped bolts drilled out and re-tapped

Skirts and unnecessary trim removed!

All badges and plastic clips from spoiler mount removed!

The body is in pretty good shape considering it's age!!

Well I had a trip up to Birmingham today to pick a bonnet up.

Here it is mocked up ready for prep....

I didn't know an alloy non-turbo bonnet existed, but I can confirm they do!!! Cost me a whopping 24 (approx $40)

Couple of snaps whist outside

More soon

Removed the rest of the interior/dash etc and was left with this mess!!

Which ended up on the floor

Fortunately the loom joins on the D/S B pillar so only have to replace the front half of the loom!!

Much tidier

Even the cat came for a nose!

Most of the external trim is removed too!

That's a big project in a small garage

Nice to see you can do these things by yourself!

Waaaay too small the garage I'm building a bigger one on land to the left of where the Prodrive is parked in the pic of both of them. Problem is this project will be long finished before then!!

I'm in North Wales, about 35 miles from Liverpool in England (by road)

No prodrive bumper for this one as I already have one on the other car (although I'm with you on it being the best bumper for a Bug) - rest assured the bumper on this car WILL be modified and not standard Will look as if its come fitted from the factory though

As I'm running without skirts (I know some of you will frown upon this, especially on a newage, but trust me it'll work on this car ) I spent a little while cutting a load of little discs :Whatever_

To fill in all the holes (32 in total on the skirts and hockey sticks) These were attacked with a wire brush to remove the paint

The little discs were held in place with my trusty magnet

and tacked on

Ground back, filled and sanded

And a quick dusting of etch primer!

Also mocked up my replacement P/S front wing courtesy of A.S.B breakers (original had been damaged at some point and was full of filler!) This too will have the marker and repeater holes smoothed as per the d/s

Another fairly productive day yesterday

Bootlid got attacked with the welder and filler

The washer jet holes got deleted from the bonnet. Had to bond blanks in place with it being alloy!!

p/s repeater gone

and the wing marker

I also started weighing up intercooler options as I don't want to cut the bumper for one. I'm deleting the air con so I have just enough room between the rad and bumper to squeeze one in with a bit of jiggery pokery!

I have been beavering away, but it's been filling, priming and sanding and there's only so many pics of half prepped panels you can post :lol1:

Rolled my D/S arch today though

Haven't updated this for a while,

Did a bit in the engine bay yesterday. Smoothing a few bits and relocating others but nothing too adventurous!!

Made a few plates to bung up a few unused holes in the bay.

Battery tray and washer bottle brackets removed.

All holes welded up (including the hole for the ABS wiring and the aircon pipework) and filled!!

Sanded back and primed

More soon

Straightened up and repaired the slam panel. The fire brigade had to prise the bonnet open so it was shaped like a banana :lol1:

Well the new parts arrived today.

As I've said I'm fitting a blob rear bumper. Reason for this is the Blob bumper is smoother to start and the wheel arch section tucks in a lot more than the bug bumper, which will marry up to the skirtless look better imo.

eg, Bug kinda flares out towards the bottom

but the blob tucks under a lot more.

Now I don't want it to look like a blob from the rear so I will be retaining the Bug tail lights. (I like making work for myself :lol1 This will require a small amount of re-working around the light area. The Blob rear lights sit slightly proud of the boot whereas the Bugs don't!

Should look the part when done, a few other small 'BLU' tweaks will be performed on the bumper too

Small bit of progress.

I played butcher yesterday to allow me to build my rear Frankenbumper :lol1:

With a bit of careful trimming the piece was tacked into place allowing me to run Bug lights with a Blob bumper

Just need to fully plastic weld the joint and dress back, then ditto on the other side! I can then give both sides a quick skim and sand should see it ready for paint!

Been busy finishing off the rear bumper!

Both sides fully plastic welded! Getting a dab hand at this now!

Got to play with some flaps...... On the flap wheel :lol1: - to dress the welds back!

Finally a bit of prettying up. The swage lines above and below the plate have gone too. Quite pleased and I've definitely got the smooth rear I was after :luvlove:

Got hold of a straight WRX front bumper - which I then proceeded to chop up

Cut the numberplate mount out.......

....... and plastic welded it flush along with the towing eye cover. More tomorrow!

Couple of pics whilst outside today
