Post How do I start my own website/page?

Hey guys and gals,

Now that I have a camera, I want to start posting my pictures. So, how do I go abouts doing that? ANy info or tips for a not-so computer literate person would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest going to www.tripod.com, go to sign-up. THey give you 50mb of free space. Be careful what you use as your username though, because mine is imprezed. So what you do is something cool. Because if you want to view my page you type, imprezed.tripod.com, so if you pick redobs as your username, you can view your webpage by going to redobs.tripod.com .... they also have a part that explains how to make one from the beginning... any other questoins email me.

Large sums of money directed at friends always helps. Microsoft Frontpage is good for newbies because it's almost like using Word. Just don't know whether Tripod supports it directly.

It does - it's pretty cool too. I hate Frontpage with a passion, but I used to use it to update the NESIC site while it was on Tripod for a few months. Very seamless when you got it working.

Once you have learned how to code HTML directly, you will hate FrontPage too.

And once you move to Adobe GoLive, you'll be like "This Rocks!" and never code the whole thing from scratch again.

writing HTML by hand is a recipe for disaster on any sites with more than a handful of pages unless you are truly anal-retentive.

I once wrote a web browser for a class project. About 90% of the web pages I tried it on barfed until I relaxed the parsing requirements to a point that it would accept almost total garbage. ironically, most of the problem sites had pages that proudly said "This page written with Notepad!"

On the other hand, the pages written using Frontpage-like editors were huge and bloated, but generally correct and parsed correctly, if a bit slowly.

And besides, I'm not sure what's there to be proud of by using Notepad. emacs/vi is much better.

Pete, just use the editor built into Netscape Composer or FrontPage or something. Learning HTML from scratch will take you away from what you really want to do, which is post your pictures.

What! The UNIX guy is telling me NO to notepad?!
NESIC, PlanetKris, Project Impreza, etc. are all coded by hand (or were created from scratch - then FrontPage f'd em up.)

My personal favorite is the following EVERYWHERE on the page!
{p align="center"}{/font}*{/p}
What's with that!

But just like Chuck - I'm not bitter.

Amen, brother efoo.

I learned to write web pages in emacs as well. Of course, when i learned HTML, it was text-only, and Mosaic was in it's infant stages.

Now, i've graduated to GoLive, but sometimes I just edit a page by hand, just to remind myself of the good old days....

I agree with Chuck... Go Live ROCKS!

It is a little overwhelming at 1st, but wowowow...the results are amazing.

And the intergration between Illustrator and Photoshop. Schweet.

Guess I have to try GoLive. I was going to attempt Dreamweaver, but it sounds if this is better.

GoLive?

eeeww. yeah, it works, but for some reason, adobe decided to move away from the "traditional" toolbar buttons and create all new ones to confuse us.

decent enuf tool, but it bombs my computer badly when, get this, adobe photoshop 5.5 is open.

Allaire Homesite is fairly stable and unlike GoLive (eats javascript code) and FrontPage (adds interesting gobbldygook, much like webkris sed) it accepts all code, tho if it's messed up, you have to fix it by hand.

another product that I like is Symantec's Visual Page. Last I heard, it didn't have a javascript generator, but for just posting images, it works pretty well. I think they have a downloadable version good for 30 days.
