Default Parking Brake and Battery light appear simultaneously while driving

Greetings,

As I was driving yesterday, I noticed the battery and parking brake light come on. After trying different variables, I noticed that it only comes on when the RPMs are below 1500. When I shift in gear and drive above 1500 rpms it will go away, but as soon as I disengage the clutch and the RPMs fall below 1500, they'll come on again. Everything else was acting fine

Today I drove to Auto Zone to get a battery check and this time the ABS light came on erratically. In addition, the speedo and tach would cut out intermittently. The positive battery terminal had an excessive amount of corrision (I'm pretty sure it wasn't that bad before, but I haven't checked recently). The battery output displayed 2v and the guy said it was definitely bad. However he wasn't sure if it was just a bad battery or if it was something wrong with the alternator, causing the battery to overcharge and overheat/leak.

Any ideas on which is the problem? I don't want to replace the battery, only to have it die again due to a bad alternator. Is there a good place to get the alternator checked?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Autozone should be able to check the alternator as well. The problems you are describing are consistent with a failing alternator.

The Autozone tech said he couldn't check the alternator because the battery was bad and I need a good battery for him to test the alternator.

No doubt the alternator is bad, and is most likely why the battery is low. If the battery is over 4 years old you may be better off replacing both items. Putting in a new battery when you change the alternator is a good practice.

A new one may run a few hundred dollars. You could also check out any local salvage yards to see if they have any.
