Exclamation Anybody know about CEL P0546 Exhaust gas temperature sensor circult high input?

I was driving along today in 5th gear, just cruising at about 50 mph and about 2000RPM, and I got a CEL. The CEL I got was: "P0546 Exhaust gas temperature sensor circult high input" So I thought, "hmmm mabe I'm running lean at partial throttle so the exhaust gas is getting hot..." So I add 5% more fuel at partial throttle cruising, drive around for 20 minutes and then I got another CEL. This time when I pulled the CEL I got the "P0546 Exhaust gas temperature sensor circult high input" once again and also a cat efficiency CEL. I figure the cat efficiency CEL is because of the added fuel, but what I want to know is, Why the hell am I getting this EGT sensor CEL?

Ok, so after searching on this topic I've come to this conclusion:

1) do the resistor mod
2) get a real EGT sensor for safety purposes

Is this what you guys recommend?

Thanks again.

Nope... just get an EGT guage. Your info is useless without telling us what mods you have. What do you mean

?

How did you add fuel? Do you have a standalone ECU?

But if I just get the EGT gauge, that won't stop me from getting that CEL. I have an Injen intake, Perrin uppipe, 3" turbo back exhaust, and S-AFC / AVC-R. I used the S-AFC to add 5%. I'm going to take it back out today though.

Just thought I would share my experience with this problem.

I installed my Perrin uppipe and I think I "tweaked" the wires on the thermistor/stock EGT sensor and therefore killed it. So it would read infinite resistance or high voltage or sensor circuit high input (which means that the voltage it's expecting to be transfered/dropped over the resistance of the thermistor is NOT so the input side of the sensor is seeing all the voltage that it sent).

BUT I didn't realize it at the time and I figured that it was just seeing 75-100F cooler temps, becuase of the lack of cat now, and so I calculated a resistor value that I could put in parrallel that would add back that 75-100F. BUT as I was doing that I tested the sensor with the new resistor with an ohm memter ONLY to find that the resistance NEVER changed no matter how hot the sensor got. Conclusion I killed the sensor and now my sensor reports a temp of about 1275F ALL the time. It did get rid of the CEL though. Shortly after I got my car unichip tuned at Cobb so I am not going to much with anything.

But my advice would be to go and buy a new one. Before doing that though use an ohm meter, or take it too a shop so they can test it, too see if you sensor is in fact dead or not. I would bet anything that it is. I don't think the ECU will complain about 75-100F cooler temps considering my sensor is now reporting 1275F ALL THE TIME when normal should be 1400-1500F under partial cruise conditions.

You could go the cheaper route and get just a resistor but I would recommend against that since you the ECU will lose visibility of that, IMHO critical, input.

Run a 2.2 resister on the ecu side of the probe just put it between the two wires and you are golden. Get a egt gauge one with a warning light if they make it and set your light for 1600f anything after that Is getting dangerous. Mount the probe 3 inches down from cylender 3.

No... not useless, I knew his problem the moment he said it.. and the solution has been explained... useless to you... but not to some of us.

I'm a bit confused... you knew the problem when he said it but your reply was "get a real egt gauge..."?

Help me with the though process.. spell it out for me ahhhhh... I know I'm ignorant but now I'm confused and ignorant!!!

FYI - my car hasn't given me the code since I reset it two days ago. I think it's because the weather got a little warmer. I'm going to hold off on the resistor fix unless it starts coming back often. People that live in warmer climates than me probably don't need to worry about this code at all.
