Default New Age RS Chatter.

I have noticed this since day 1, and it's beginning to concern me.
Currently have 1500kms on the car.

Say my engine is hovering around 3k rpm. If I accelerate there is no noise, but once I lift-off I hear it. A chattery noise. It's loud enough to be very noticeable coming from the front. It lasts for only a few seconds, and is most prominent during 3krpm lift-offs. I've always assumed it was just a Subaru rough engine thing, but I'm starting to wonder.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Question

Loose timing belt tensioner? Loose heat shield? Piston slap?

Does it go away after warming the engine up?

Does the 02 RS have the clutch decel noise? maybe see if any of the deceleration noise posts match your desription.

I can be more descriptive after another drive today.

There are two distinctly different noises Im experiencing. The first one, I notice most when the car is cold. After I lift off the gas, I can hear a soft, random, click-click-click noise coming from the engine. It's not very loud, and once Im in traffic I can't hear it at all, so I don't know if it just happens when the car is cold.

There is another noise, it's a buzzing, chattering noise that I get around 4000 rpms. It usually happens after lift-off, but at the same time it sounds like a variation of wind noise. It's a moderately loud, buzzy, chattering sound that lasts a second or two.

Any ideas?

Spt, thats a good way to describe it.

You're in Canada too, I wonder what luck we'll have getting them to replace our clutches. Let's hope we have better luck than some of our neighbours. I'm bracing for Dealership nightmare...

Well, I have a 99 OBS 4eat and when I get close to redline, and then shift (or have the car shift) down, I hear that heat rattle noise. I only really started hearing it when I got my cat-back. I always thought it was caused by a heavier midpipe from stock or maybe the exhaust shaking and hitting the heat shields. It only happens at high revs, so I guess I don't worry about it much.

Any ideas?

Sam_P,

clutches???? what are you talking about??

and i called my dealer about the rattle and they said it didnt sound like anything major....so they would check it at my next service. its kinda pissing me off though.....we in e-town have a meet at the new subaru dealership on may 4th so i think i might just ask around there.....for their opinions.....i will let you know.

also ot seems to go away after the car warms up a bit...i wonder it is the metals doing wonky things....

Are you sure it's not Subaru's decel noice? If it is, then it's nothing to worry about. Although you can read tons of threads on here about it and also find out that pretty much all subarus have had this for ever. Just got more popular with the WRX

If that's what you are hearing, it is no big deal. If it's really loud and freaks you out then you can take it in and they'll put in a new clutch and also a heavier flywheel. It's mainly this heavier flywheel that stops the sound (although it won't totally get rid of it). And if you put in a lightened aftermarket flywheel expect the sound to get worse. But, again, it's no harm to your car.
