Speedo not working

in a nutshell ^ (2005 sti)

all the gauges sweep like normal when starting up. when i start the car 1st thing in the morning, or when its been sitting a while, the speedo will work for the first few minutes while driving.. seems to die as soon as car gets warmed up..
have tried resetting battery already.

some observations:

tach and gauges sweep normally when 1st starting up

when speedo dies during driving, so does odometer (doesn't register mileage)

data logging cable is able to read out vehicle speed from ecu (even when speedo gauge is dead at 0)

no cel for vss

not really sure where to go from here
