Default help with misfires near Plattsburgh NY?

My stepfather has a stage 2 Legacy GT that is having major misfire issues (2-4 cylinders misfiring, horrible idle after car warms up). He's tried switched between a couple different stage 2 maps, new plugs, injector cleaner, cleaned his MAF, but it hasn't improved. The local dealership wants all the stock parts back on before they look at it, and I think he's nervous about driving it 50 minutes to Moon Performance to have them take a look at it.

Does anyone have any shops they would recommend close to Plattsburgh?

Would anyone in the area be willing to help diagnose his issues, maybe with a laptop and tactrix?

Thanks,

Ben

Have you checked the plugs to see if they are fouled? Or have you tried switching the coilpacks to different cylinders to see if the problems follow the coilpacks? That's where I'd start.

He changed the plugs a couple times, with no improvments. The original plugs looked pretty good, the car only has 45k on it. I'm pretty sure he has moved the coils around, and that didn't help either. He went from misfires on 1 and 3, to 1 and 4, and then he's been getting codes for all four cylinders recently. He claims it will start and run OK for a while, but after a moderate accleration, he'll get misfire codes, and the car will almost stall at idle.

My car did the same thing. I would get random misfire codes or all 4 cylinders misfiring at the same time. Eventually I got a code for a bad o2 sensor heater circuit. I replaced the o2 sensor and haven't had a misfire code since.

Lightened flywheel by a chance also?

i was having a very similar problem after a turbo install and injectors and limp map flash from my tuner. when the car is idling, tell your stepfather to disconnect the MAF. if the idle smooths out, could be the MAF. if not, something mechanical. for me, i would disconnect the MAF, and the idle would smooth out, but it would run crazy rich. i know you said he replaced it before, so check the connections around there. and check for vacuum leaks also.

I have a similar situation on my stock car. Pulled a P21 code which is subaru specific along with a few misfires. Turns out the P21 is the coolan temp sensor. Even though my CEL is off now, (haven't had to coolant temp sensor replaced yet) it's still doing it. So that is another avenue to check.

Thanks for the suggestions. At this point, he put the stock inlet on to bring it to the dealership (which doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the dealership...). The flywheel is stock, just a light crank pulley that has been fine for years. I don't know if he has tried to disconnect the MAF while he is having his rough idle (he tried cleaning the MAF, with Carb cleaner at first, oops). My brother has a WRX, so I'll tell him to try switching the O2 sensor as well. He did try switching the coils around, and the misfires did not follow the coils. I think he may have thrown a P21 at some point, there seem to be a few more avenues to try.

Thanks,

Ben
