Unhappy AC is shot!

A couple weeks ago my air conditioning started blowing hot air. Great timing on the Scooby's part, right before summer's about to hit in full swing! So I took it to a mechanic who quoted me roughly $800 for a rebuild or just over $1300 to have the compressor and a leaky hose replaced

My question is, does anybody have the hookups on someone who can get my ac blowing cold again without gouging my wallet? Maybe these are reasonable prices, I don't know. I've never had to get the ac on any of my cars repaired before.

Please let me know! I live in Phoenix, more specifically in Glendale.

Get a second opinion. If you need a recharge, then obviously there is a leak somewhere. Ifind it a little hard to believe that you need a new compressor unless it is what's leaking. Hopefully you will just need a leaky line replaced and a recharge. I'm guessing that'll run you a couple hundred or so.

You could also go the DIY route. Go to Autozone / Checker and get a cheap R134 recharge kit that has a few cans and the cold side charging kit with a guage on it. Then get one can that has the dye in it. Charge it up and look for a leak. Maybe you can find the hose and fix it yourself. Plus, charging it may be enough to get you by for the summer.

I would check for leaks in your condensor. That is what went in mine a couple years ago. They dont like rocks.
