I saw a late 80's to mid 90's (I don't know) Subaru Loyale TURBO. The car seemed to be pretty quick. We were not really racing, but I beat him off the light and he ended up catching up pretty fast. It was in great shape. Light Blue with Turbo graphics on the lower doors and the trunk, and no rust!
Has anyone else ever seen one of these? Paul G. |

Was it a sedan? I've only seen one turbo'd sedan! A friend of mine had one forever and a day ago (think it was like an '87). IIRC, it's a 1.8L turbo'd engine with about 115hp, like the Loyale RX turbo coupe.

Yeah, it was sedan. They had a baby seat in back, and it did not look like the coupes, or say RX on it. It looked just like any other Subaru Loyal except it had Turbo stickers on it.
I thought it was cool. Paul G. |

I believe they started offering the Turbo Loyale sedan, coupe and wagon as early 85 as well as an RX version? I have an 88 RX Sedan which my brother and I just finished taking out the drivetrain on this past weekend. The turbo EA82 engine put out around 111HP and 135lbs of torque(I'm going by my 88 RX specs). Mine was a fun car and quicker than most would expect. But, they were prone to rusting bodies and oil leaks!

Ok, here goes...I consider myself knowledgeable in the 80's Subaru area. The first Turboed subies were offered from 81-83 and used the EA-81 pushrod engine (no timing belt). These were offered in the first generation GL wagons and Brats with AT. Then in 85 they changed the line up (and changed engines to the EA-82 in everything except the hatchback) a little and made Turbo GL-10's and non-turboed Gl-10's...both in the wagon and in the Sedan. Come 87 they offered the 3 door coupe which came turboed in the RX and XT-6 versions (even a couple of Brats I think)...also known as legal drag racer
This was offered along with the GL-10's. Now in 1990 Subaru dumped the GL line and went with the Legacy....and the Loyale (SPFI now..carbed engines went out around 87-88) was the cheap persons way of tranportation (a step below the legacy). A 1993 Loyale is the same thing as a 1985 GL except GL's had nicer interiors and had dual range 4wd. The XT's were also stripped down and discontinued in early 92. The Loyale was available in a Turbo version from 90-91 in both the sedan and wagon. The next turbo was of course the Legacy wagon. So it was probably a GL-10 sedan or a Loyale. The only way to tell is by the wheels. The GL-10's have nice alloys and the loyales have the starburst 23 spoke hub caps.Kevin [This message has been edited by kevinsUBARU (edited October 03, 2000).] |

Well, I did not get that good of a look. It had hub cabs though, but they might have been changed. It said Loyal on the trunk, and turbo on the back of the passenger door (in front of the rear wheel, on the back door). I was just stunned at how good the body looked. It must have been well kept, or repainted.

I believe the only year they offered a Turbo Brat was in 84. And you could get the RX as early as 85 but, it was just a sticker on the side of the doors and a trunk foam spoiler, and I'm not sure what else really? But, I think all the turbo Loyals had 4 wheel discs. The 87-89 RX was offered in a hatchback and sedan and came in black or white for the hatchback and white in the sedan. The 87-89 RX's had ground affects, full-time 4WD, hi-low range, differential lock, LSD rear, 4 wheel discs, MPFI EA82 Turbo and most power options. This is all info I have gained in the past years dealing with my RX. Like I said they were fun and quicker than most would expect. But, the rust bug has destroyed many, including mine. Now I'll just have to drop the engine and training in my Brat!

ESPO99RS: THanks for that info..I was a little off base on a couple of my years I guess. I believe that the Turbo Brat was offered in the Gen 1 and 2 models...not too many but a couple and only in the auto trannys. Thanks for the other info on the RX's though

yeah.. what he said.
![]() I think the car was light blue or silver. But it could have been repainted. I wish I could have got him to pull over. Now that I know, I'll ask questions or get a better look. Thanks for all the info. Paul G. |

No problem with the info guys, I enjoy talking about the older Subaru's just as much as the new ones. To bad my RX wasn't still together and running or else I would have brought it to one of the meets, I guess I'll just have to bring the Brat sometime. Just need to get a clutch in it.
