Default Does your BFG KDW sound like a helicopter?

Coming from Michellin stuff, I haven't really heard tire noise that hums above 35mph at a higher pitch other than the usual gravel mix or constant concrete grind sound. Either way, it's a constant sound.

Then I put on some BFG KDW (the summer ones, not to be mistaken with the all seasons and other versions) in 225/45/17 and now I have this humming that isn't a constant sound but sounds more like helicopter rotors turning (whum whum whum or a thrumming like someone else described) and it gets faster as I go faster, but not louder (well, maybe a tiny bit, but not noticable really). When hitting highway speeds, it becomes less of a beat, and closer to a constant hum. Car has been aligned. Wheels are balanced AFAIK. Tire pressures set to 35/34. Use so far: ~3 months.

Is this what you guys are experiencing?

I don't have those tires (running Fuzion ZRi's) but I get that sound. Wear is normal, all four have been Roadforce balanced. No unusual wear. I think the tread design has a lot to do with it. Think I read something in the reviews on TireRack about that too.

it usually means that your alignment is off

get the toe set to '0'....NOT 'in spec'.....'0' and that will help..........

..........on the next set of tires as the damage is done and they will just get worse

heh not concerned with the noise level because like i said in the OP, it doesn't really get loud (actually to me it's not loud compared to the stock tires we get). it's more of an unfamiliar sound and i wanted to know if this is just how the KDW (or other with similar treads) sound normally. i came from michellin pilots and it was just constant humming instead of this rotor sound.

anyhow, thanks for the input. i'll double check alignment in two weeks. meanwhile, i'll swap to my stockers to see if it's something else making the sound.

+1 The biggest complaint about those tires is how unbelievably loud they are.

I have the KDWs. The old tread style, not the new tread style. Put them on new 5k miles ago. Had them rotated once. P225/50/r16...

They make noise. But just a hum. No chopper noise. May be a problem with one of the tires. Coming apart. But to answer your question. No unusual noises. Normal summer tire hum.

(For the record, screw the noise. These tires rock. Great cornering, launching, braking, and once got to lazy to change to steelies/snow tires and took these KDWs offroad and they did great. I wouldn't rally with them but they did real good! You have to listen for the noise. The drone of the muffler, open window noise, or even the stereo will cancel the sound.

If I wanted quiet tires, I would have bought a Cadillac.)

Interesting. I have the new tread style. Not sure if your taller sidewall will deaden noise some. And I'm using stock exhaust, so I may be hearing more (my girl says I must have dog ears because I can hear every little noise in the car and she can't). Tend to drive with windows up too and without stereo on. It's not loud, nor noisy really. It's just.. odd sounding. LOL

The sound is really only apparent with my windows up and stereo off.
