Arrow Anyone let me borrow their spring compressor tool? Herndon, VA

My rce comp camber plate cracked, so I am replacing them with the STI group n ones.... Can I borrow someone's spring compressor tool for a day or two so that I can install the new top mounts?

Thanks much,
-Nigel

You can borrow one from Advance for free and keep it for 90 days if I remember correctly.

Also, the group n top hats are more compliant than the RCE tops so things will get a little less harsh for you if that matters.

The advance auto near me had a spring compressor that would probably only work on a 4x4, it needed to mounted inside the spring. Tried to use it. Then went and bought the cheap version at harbor freight. For I believe $12 I got the set of two compressors that mount on the outside and work well for strut based suspensions.

They have two different types of spring compressors...just make sure you get the correct kind for our cars.

Also depending on the springs you're running you might not even need a compressor; just a couple of friends.

Awesome thanks guys!

tut4u2: I am just pissed it's cracked... lol My ride is already stiff/harsh but I've used to it..

So when I am at advance auto I need to ask for the spring compressors that clamp on the outside right.

Thanks,
-Nigel

Yes...the ones that clamps on the outside. It should look like this:

Just clamp one on either side of the spring and have at it.

If they don't have it, then they can check the stores in the surrounding area for you as well so keep that in mind.

I'm surprised the RCE plates cracked truth be told. I have used them before and beat the living hell out of them and they have responded well. Maybe try calling RCE and maybe they can work something out with you? Unless you already got the Group N ones.

Excellent, thats what I was picturing in my head.

Yea ditto on the crack... that's why I bought them but from what I have been told now they are really just meant for the Tarmac and no D/D setup...

Here are two pics.

Got the Group N top hats today, they look identical so it's safe to say it doesn't matter which strut they go on right?

Thanks,
-Nigel

advance auto charges 50$ per compressor, assuming you need 2 compressors, you need to LOAN them 100$. when you return it they give you the money back. so its not COMPLETELY free but you get the point

but on most springs you dont need a compressor you can use bear strength

That's correct. Doesn't matter which side they go on.

Sucks about the crack...I'm sure you can still see them for some $$$ though lol

Also pay attention to the position of your camber adjustment bolt when you're taking the strut out of the car, unless you're getting an alignment after then it doesn't matter

Why would you ever use 2 compressors (4 clamps) at the same time...

Not true. $50 deposit for the 2 of them. You get $50 back when you return it.

Got the Group N's installed... I had the NON lowering version of the RCE camber plates and now with the Group N's it looks the front end of my car is higher?

It's still a 2finger gap in the front fender from tire... which I believe is what it was with my rce plates, but it just seems to me that it's higher up?

Yea, I replaced the camber plates with group n mounts. But from what I read even though the car was up for a couple hours it still might need to settle again, plus the new rubber on the group N's need to settle in I guess too..lol

Well wait a couple days and see what happens.

Springs need to settle again...Give it a day.

I have never heard of top hats needing to settle but shrug...learn something new everyday
