Angry Check Engine Light... Off Switch

Does anyone no how to turn off a check engine light. It came on last night and I want it off. Car is running fine and its just a reminder to me that I probably have to shell out $700 bucks for an Pennsylvania emission sticker. It went on twice before and each time its a catalitic converter... the last time was less then 2 years ago.

I'm not sure if this still works, but the old "shade tree" way is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes.

This used to require the follow after reconnecting battery: Turn on ignition, but don't start engine. Pump the accelerator 3-5 times, slowly. Turn off ignition. Then start engine. Pumping the accelerator was required to get the ECU to "re-learn" the full range of the throttle body potentiometer. Again, I'm not sure this is required on Subaru's.

Or if all else fails, a piece of tape over the lamp will work

you can turn the light off (switch or clear codes even) all you want but when they plug into your Baja to do the test you will instantly fail. (either due to not being ready to do the test or having your light out) You can get a fix it exemption but they aren't cheap.

Also, I do have a PA inspection license

I took a different approach to getting that light out... I tightened my gas cap. My bad, for the first time in 6 years I had an easy fix.

On a friend's 200k mile Forrester running a tank of premium got the light to go out long enough to pass the test for antother year.

Bottom line, you can't just shut it off though, you need to make whatever condition is causing it go away.

EDIT - oops, should have read the whole thread, for once someone got the elevator instead of the shaft... cool
