Default Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger Coming to NASCAR? Camaro to Follow?

Quote:
During NASCAR's annual media tour in Charlotte last January, Penske Dodge Charger driver Kurt Busch said he was looking forward to the new season, which, he hoped, would be better than Dodge's grim 2008 campaign. One reason concerned some new bits and pieces that NASCAR was allowing to be introduced throughout the 2009 season, including a new engine that is just now debuting mid-season.

Just as important, according to Busch, was that the Dodge Charger got a new, more aerodynamic nose piece this year, too. As an afterthought, he added, "Really, it's the Chevrolet nose with Dodge decals on it."

With all four participating manufacturers, even Toyota, cutting back on motorsports support this year, one of their longtime complaints seems ever more valid. That’s that the old "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" adage fades with every NASCAR body mutation that makes the various stock-car models look as androgynous as Indy Cars or NHRA dragsters.

No one thinks that the Chevrolet Impala Mark Martin drove to victory at last Sunday's LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway is a real Chevrolet Impala, and the fact that the cars must be labeled in large letters on the front bumper says it all. How can you cheer for a brand, when the cars are so similar?

But word around the Michigan pits suggested—finally—that could change, at least in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, which is one step down from the top-dog Sprint Cup Series. When the Nationwide Series finally moves to the inarguably safer "Car of Tomorrow" design, NASCAR may allow different body styles that would include the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and—if Chevrolet signs on—the Camaro. With the cancellation of the Toyota Camry Solara, Toyota would run a Camry, although a rumored Celica-like sports coupe could be a more appropriate pony-car competitor.

The Advantages? Multiple. The Drawbacks? Minimal.

At the top of the list of advantages would be the chance to finally differentiate the Nationwide cars from the Cup cars. Running identical body styles as they do now, as well as both using V-8 engines, does not allow the Nationwide series to develop its own personality, as it did years ago when, for example, Nationwide cars could use a V-6.

Advantage two: Complaints persist that the Nationwide cars are so similar to the Cup cars that many Cup competitors run the Saturday series as a test-and-tune for the Sunday Cup race, gaining valuable information about track conditions. Critics call the Nationwide Series "Cup Light," because of the plethora of Cup drivers moonlighting in what is supposed to be a developmental series. Four of the top five drivers in Nationwide points are Cup drivers. By making the Cup and Nationwide cars more different, one could reasonably assert that fewer Cup drivers would participate, as information gained in a Nationwide race wouldn't transfer as easily as it would if the new Nationwide cars were carbon copies of the Sprint Cup’s Car of Tomorrow. And if major teams fielding both Cup and Nationwide Series cars saw that overall developmental costs would rise—wind tunnel data, for instance, couldn’t be applied to both cars—perhaps smaller teams would stand a better chance of competing.

Advantage three: As NASCAR tries to attract new manufacturers to the series, offering three separate cars as entry points—the Sprint cars, the Nationwide cars, and the Camping World Series trucks—is that much more appealing to a variety of companies. A Hyundai Genesis coupe in the Nationwide series? A Volkswagen CC? A BMW 3-series? It could happen. Allowing differing bodies could also allow makers to spread around motorsports marketing budgets among different badges within the same company—think Cadillac CTS or Chrysler Sebring.

One problem, however, is that while Ford and Dodge motorsports officials have been telling us since 2007 that they would like to run the Mustang and Challenger in NASCAR, Chevrolet seems reluctant to pull the trigger on a NASCAR Camaro, although you may see the company use the Malibu for Nationwide races instead of the Cup Impala.
The bottom line is that we will get a new, unique NASCAR Nationwide Series car, but whether we will get body styles actually recognizable as pony cars remains to be seen. But NASCAR has to do something to get manufacturers, and fans, excited about the stepchild series, and this could do it

F NASCAR. Bring back a Trans-Am series!

Require: stock bodywork, OE windshield, stock engine & transmission and factory suspension pick-up points

Allow: upgraded cooling, wheels/tires/suspension, ECU tweaks, intake and exhaust, safety cage, stripped interior, window glass delete

I'd watch that.

I agree, the old trans-am stuff was good to watch. I remember watching a show on the series and the manufactures got really creative on how to gain an advantage, fun stuff.

Who cares it's just a shell painted to look like the actual car. Bring back actual stock car racing and I'll start watching trailer trash car racing. Until then I'll have to suffer watching F1 with it's crazy KERS nonsense.

Are you trying to say Grand-Am Koni Challenge is owned by NASCAR?

I'm a closet NASCAR fan, but my almost 4 year old son loves it. We built an HO scale, 4 slot track that is L shaped around his bed. Each lane has about 34 feet of track. His favorite race cars are the cars my dad got for me when I was 4 or 5 years old. Those cars have character. When he is in it to win it, he grabs his Indy or F1 car. He races the newer style nascars like his FedEx car, or Home Depot, just because he sees them on the TV, but he doesn't get down and inspect the corners and shape of those cars because they are all the same. Also, just like TV, we have track cleaning on Sunday night before bed time.

The cars back then looked like the cars you could buy at the dealerships, so that win on Sunday, sell on Monday makes sense to me. As auto enthusiasts, it is more exciting to watch a race that makes me chear for the car I really want to buy.
