Default Swapping DOHC heads for SOHC ?

I'm thinking about swapping the DOHC heads for SOHC heads on the EJ25 ('98ish, non turbo) that I have in my Beetle.

Can this be done using the stock ECU ?
Obviously I'd need a new timing belt, but would everything else work fine ? Would I need different Cam Position Sensor ?

The reason I want to do this is that they take up less space, and might allow me to close the engine lid

Thanks,
Rob.

I haven't swapped them out yet, they are still on the car.
If the swap works I'd be interested in selling them, but the shipping cost would kill you

It would take extensive rewiring of sensors. The ECUs for the DOHC and SOHC engines are completely different - the plugs aren't compatible.

funny thing is the blocks will bolt up with no issues but head changing can be a nightmare really..sucks either way its better cooling for your bug anyways with it being rear mounted and all...plus you can show off the heart of the car...be like dune buggys expose the engine...

No there not, sensors plug right in. I swapped a ej22 sohc into my g/f's 98 forester that originally had an ej25 dohc. There is only one cam sensor on dohc and sohc!

You're not comparing apples and oranges. I can guarantee you that you cannot put SOHC heads and intake manifold from an EJ25 into a EJ25 DOHC car and expect it to be plug-and-play. It doesn't work.

That is the question the OP asked, and that is the question I answered.
