Hey guys, recently acquired a 97 Impreza OBS 4EAT and it has issues with the gear selector. The locking mechanism seems to be malfunctioning because I can move the gear selector from P all the way down to 1 freely without pressing the side button. I can also change gears even without depressing the brake pedal. Does this have to do with the shift lock mechanism? Also my key is stuck in the ignition and won't go back to LOCK so I'm suspecting the two are related. Other than this, the car drives fine, I just have to be careful not to bump the shifter into R when I'm on D
. Anyone come across this?

Hi Gottarex
1. I have my shifter out currently, On the right hand side on top there is a small plastic opening this is a fail safe. Like, if you cannot get your shifter to go from anywhere but park. Although you have the oposite problem. This top hole section allows you to put something ie: thin pic small screwdriver down into that hole in there is a arm that is spring loaded, when it is pushed down it releases a lock so that the shifter can be shifted. This arm pushes down the lock mechanisum on the right side of the shifter. It sounds like part of the mechanisum is either damaged or removed. 2. There is also a switch that is related to the brake pedal, sounds like this one would let you remove the key. Did you try pushing the brake pedal and put the shifter into park then remove the key. if not check the link that is by the brake pedal Hope this helps Westgl |

thanks but I figured it out. There's actually a pin that popped right out from underneath the shifter. It's hard to explain but it all makes sense once I started taking the shifter surrounds apart. The pin also hits a switch underneath P that triggers the key to go back to the Lock position. I just put the pin back in everything solved
