Default Fatal wreck in NASCAR Mexico

Just saw this video, this has to be the worst crash I've ever seen in motorsports. What a terribly unsafe track design...

Motosports fans, don't watch this please. I feel bad after doing so.

What a shame, and an unsafe design.

Posthumous victory as well. That's just tragic.

Ok, just got back from work and can see the vid. Damn. That track is just effing stupid.

As horrible as this is, I think it is appropriate to post things like this in this forum. It serves to remind all of us in motorsports what the stakes are.

Even in this country, some tracks are designed poorly, drivers take unnecesary risks(hpde AND racing), and sanctions and track managment alike tend to have a reactionary approach to saftey issues.

If I had a nickel for every time someone has dismissed a safetey concern with "it'll be fine" or "what are the chances of that happening?"...

I got as much from the story (which does need to be told) as I would have from seeing the video. I don't need to see a video of someone dying.

its nasty in the sense of the instant destruction of the vehicle. you can't see any bodily harm, but that doesnt take away from the 'holy *****' factor at the point of impact.

wow. so unnecessary. legal action against the driver that bumped him? jail for life?

In reality, i know Nascar is a race of attrition. Survive long enuf to outlast everyone else. But honestly, why not penalize people more severely for not racing "clean"?

Well if you don't like it, then simply don't watch it.

Other than that, it's insane to see how mangled the cage was. I'm not saying that if it was constructed better that the driver may have lived. At the speed he was traveling he would have most likely made mush of his organs the instant he hit.

Racing is racing and things happen that we would rather not. It's fun, exciting and enjoyable for spectators as well as the driver...but everyone knows the risk once they strap in and put that helmet on.

are you ****ing serious?!!!?!?

Those cars drive very close to each other. If you didn't realize the car involved was looking to pass and the lead tried to box him off and helped to cause the accident. key word

that wall was concrete? are all Nascar barricades in the infield concrete? because that didn't help at all. Well, its hard to say if the guy behind him really did anything wrong, but thats one of those things I don't like about NASCAR is the nudging, drafting, and how frail and prone to lift those cars are.

Water then concrete...

I wonder how fast he was traveling?

It looks like the guy behind him took his nose away from his rear (lifting the rear of his car) causing it to step out..

Nascar still uses lockers (I'm pretty sure) and when you loose several hundred/thousand pounds of downforce - from a car stepping back or away it allows that air to escape and lift the rear... causing his rear to come around and loose control.

I'm willing to be there was no contact..

It looks like it was concrete and they put some water barrels in front of it in a feeble attempt to cushion it. It's a horrible design and I can't believe they would allow anyone to race there, let alone at the pro level.

To those who say the video is unnecessary...just don't watch it. You don't even see the driver (other than a quick glimpse of his helmet) and there's a warning that pops up at the beginning of the video that it's potentially graphic/disturbing.

Wow...very sad indeed coming from someone who did a lot of Formula/Sports Car racing in Mexico

Last race was at the Hermanos Rodriguez track which is the same place CHAMP cars used to run and F1 back in the days - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aut%C3%...Rodr%C3%ADguez

I think that's ridiculous. We don't even know if it was his fault. The driver ahead may have checked up, or been impeding the other driver in some way. Either way, when you race you assume the possibility of the worst case scenario, such as this. If you're not willing to accept it, then stay the **** off the track. Racing is racing, and stuff happens, and usually such a crash would not end fatally. You can't punish the DRIVER for the design of the course or the way the crash would happen, that's just proposterous.
