Default Newbie with some questions about downpipes and going stg 2 with apexi N1 catback

Hello everyone, before I start yes I have read and searched a lot about this topic but I have some questions that I need some answers for.

I currently have a stg 1 2006 wrx with an Apexi N1 catback exhaust. I have been looking at downpipes for awhile now because I am ready for stg 2. The downpipes I have been looking at are the HKS blank plate, Invidia V3, ERZ, and the Megan racing downpipe. All catless btw..

So here are the questions:
Is anyone running any of these downpipes with the Apexi N1 catback, and if so how which one and how is the fitment, likes and dislikes, and how much louder did the downpipe make your car, etc...

I dont think I will be doing much work passed the Stg 2 that the Cobb Accessport provides, so my question is, if i am not going to upgrade too much further after going stg 2, does it matter if I get a blank plate or a bellmouth downpipe??

Also I am located in maryland, and with numerous calls to shops around the area, the cheapest install I found for a downpipe is $250...Is that too expensive because in the unabombers manifesto, he said a normal install is around $75..Just wondering if $250 is a normal price people have been getting or if I am getting ripped off.

Also, if anyone has any other brands of downpipe that are a good bang for the buck and reliable that I am missing I would love to know what they are so I can do further research.

Any responses will greatly help my search for the downpipe that suites my needs will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks to anyone that responds and helps!!
-Gus

Yes, $250 is too much for a downpipe install. I have family in Maryland, so I know the cost of living is higher there, especially around DC. Still though, that price seems a little ridiculous to me.

a few things here to answer: (this is wawawrx btw)

1: i have an apexi n1 on my 08 and as of tuesday i will have the tsudo catless DP(ERZ) and will be able to get back to you. pricewise it's a steal, lets be honest, you're buying a stainless steal pipe. i don't know why some companies want to charge 300+ when you can get the tsudo for 150.

2: you need someone to install your downpipe? it's 4 bolts and 2 gaskets. anyways... if you really need a shop to do it, go find a simple muffler shop, they will just say give me $50 cash and do it for you in 20 minutes

as far as blank plate/bellmouth it shouldn't make a performance difference

i assume you alreay have the accessport on a stage 1 OTS map, make sure you figure out exactly what the stage 2 ots maprequires, it might require an intake for optimal performance.

i've heard good things about helix downpipes, but i have an 08 and i'm cheap so i have a tsudo arriving tuesday and will update you with sound clips

yea I would want to do it myself but I dont have the correct equipment to lift the car, etc... I started calling just local muffler shops around the area and their prices were incredibly high also and they didnt seem too confident in how long it would take( most said from 2-3 hours), and from reading around it shouldnt take that long, especially with the tools and knowledge some shops have

I look forward to hearing how yours sounds...Thanx for your comments

Anyone else with some insight/comments??

go to walmart
-buy $50 jack
-buy 2 $20 jackstands
-Total $90, maybe??
do it yourself = profit?

or buy 2 ramps
now you can do your own oil changes too

$250 is ridiculous as stated above, i can take mine off and back on in 20 mins... its 7 bolts (4 front, 2 rear, 1 hanger)

personally I would go with a any bellmouth design dp. And installing the dp yourself is very feasible if you can install a catback.

Also if you don't plan on going passed stage II I recommend just getting an opensource protune unless you want change maps on the fly with the AP.

I am also looking to install my downpipe that I just got in the mail yesterday, and Invidia V3 catless bellmouth
I am located in baltimore, so maybe when you figure out what you are going to purchase we can get together with someone who knows exactly how to do it

$250 is too much. Use that towards other parts.
Like pauli saids, get a jack stand and diy.
Dont get intimidated. Its not that hard, and you'll feel proud of yourself once its done.

One of the reason I decided to do it myself was because incase it doesnt work out during inspection, I can put the stock parts back together myself without having to pay somebody else again and again for install/reinstall whens it comes to inspection/warranty time.

Tips:
Just remember, if you can, replace the rusty heat shield screws(cheap at home depot), apply anti-seize, and do not torque it too tight. That will make removal easy next time incase you need to.

Any bolt/nuts that are tight, PB soaked and use a breaker or a wrench with a hammer, pounding gently.

Good luck.

Buy the jack stands like was stated before. It isn't that hard an install. But it is more than "4 bolts and two gaskets" at least I know on an 06 it is. There are some really great tutorials on here you can look at.

The WRX should've come with a catless UP stock - removing this cat should be the first thing you do

Ok so its all DONE!!! Thanks for all the encouragement from you guys, my brother and I decided to mount my Invidia Catless downpipe ourselves. It took us a little over 5 hours because it was our first time and we wanted everything to be perfect and flawless.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out, it was needed and helped

Don't go catless... the gains are minimal compared to catted, and you don't have to deal with the hassle of cops and getting inspection. Right now, ERZ Performance is selling catted ERZ downpipes for 299 plus free shipping. They claim that their high flow cats have the same flow rate as Helix and Invidia cats.

yes you do. if you managed to install the DP then the UP is as easy with a few extra steps.

to the OP, you should have installed the UP as well at the same time like suggested above as it should be the first thing to do. Nevertheless, DIY! for the experience

He has an 06, 06 WRX = catless, which means he doesn't need to replace it and it's not the first thing he should do.
