Default first oil change?

i recently purchased an '09 WRX...and i finally broke the 1000 mile mark. in my previous '02 WRX, i recall swapping the conventional oil to mobil 1 synthetic at that point. should i do the same? should i even need to change the oil at 1000 miles? or just wait til 3000? your opinions are welcome on this topic.

thx,
db97

i think the factory manual says you can wait for 3750 miles for the first oil change.

I couldn't wait. i have 950 miles and put in Mobil 1 10w-30 despite all the bad press it gets on here.

I have not seen one person that talks crap about Mobil 1 prove that the oil hurt their engine.

Ive always had good luck with it in all my other cars so im going to continue to use it.

My opinion is to worry about the economy or something worth a hoot as the conventional vs. synthetic debate will rage from now until the moon cracks in two, the earth falls off it's axis, and we all ride big horses like in the cartoon Thundar the Barbarian. In the end, you will sell your car way before the pros/cons of either have any affect.

Keep the factory fill in until 3k. The longer you wait to switch to M1 the better, IMO.

M1 UOA with high wear.
M1 UOA with high copper.
M1 vs RTS . Note the mileage on the RTS vs. the Mobil.
Another M1 UOA.

Did any of these people eventually have engine problems? I don't know because most people switch to something else after uoa's like these. If you want to run M1, I would go with a High Mileage version, 0W-40, EP, or TDT 5W-40.

Various articles in a lubrication industry trade magazine claiming not meeting wear specs:

Mobil 1 is garbage

there are a LOT of bad ideas out there about when to switch and to what....but the idiots usually shout down those of us that have really done the research and know better

piss in it and see if that works

I switched to synthetics after 1k miles. Only did so because I had a ton of oil from working at a VW dealer. As others have said its not going to hurt anything if you run dino oils as long as they are changed often. Ive seen a few turbocharged Subaru's produce great UOA's while using dino oils. If you insist on switching to synthetics many people here will suggest Rotella 5w-40. Its cheap, easy to find, and will provide excellent protection in any climate.

Kept my factory fill in for 2,500 and then used conventional oil (Mobil Drive Clean) for another 2,500 miles. I then switched over to a semi-synthetic (Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic) for 2,500 miles, followed by another 2,500 mile OCI with a different semi-synthetic (Mobil Clean 7500). I then switched over to synthetic (Castrol Syntec 0W-30) and have been sticking roughly to 5,000 OCIs since then.

I'm waiting till the recommended oil change of 3,750 miles for my 1st oil change. I did notice everyone recommending Rotella 5w-40. Is anyone having issues with cats going bad due to the high zinc content of these diesel oils? I know if your burning oil the cat going bad is inevitable. Subaru recommends 5W-30 but will switching to GC 0W-30 or Rotella 5W-40 void the warranty? I'm guessing as long as it's "SM" rated it should alright. Did most of you start using Synthetic at the first oil change or waited till later?

Default reg or synthetic

Gonna switch to synthetic. Should I do the first oil change with regular before going to synthetic?

5-40W oil should be fine, in fact my manual says 10-40W under hot or extreme conditions. As far as the Zinc in the HDEO oils, since the Rotella carries the SM label it is fine!

after having owned just 2 of these cars....and having been here and read all I have read and researched

MOST of what is posted about oil and when and what and all that is just WRONG and posted by those who know NOTHING about any of it other than wives tales and faulty logic 'common sense'

many of these cars have oil consumption/engine reliability issues due to improper break in/oil selection because of this....but the root cause is often overlooked because of the faulty logic used by those who have no idea of anything related other than the wives tales
