Should I be surprised that my 6 year old car needs an AC recharge
Cools but not that well. Blows fog out the vents.
What is typical?

Yep, normal. Fix it yourself for $50. Super easy, and can be done while drinking beer.

my 2001 AC still works perfectly. If it needs a recharge, then coolant is leaking from somewhere. but it may be leaking so slowly that you might not care.

We have found that most cars loose about .25 lb. every two years.

I thought freon does not need to be recharged unless there is a leak in the system.

5-6 years is a good run and not unusual at all. Just have it charged and leak checked.

I added a can of R134 and it works great.
When I added it it went almost immediately to 28 low 250 high. 95 degree ambient. I kept adding it till the high side approched 275-290. There has to be some way to tell if the correct amount is in there besides starting form 0. |

Is that where you measure the condenser outlet temperature and get it 10 degrees below the saturated temperature? I have seen a rule where you charge till the high side is 2.2 times ambient. I don't understand the logic behind either one.
