Exclamation Can I drive on bad head gaskets?

I need to drive a 98 impreza from redding,ca to Paradise,ca which is about 1.5 hours. The owner says it has a bad head gasket because it overheats and and has to stop and put water in every 10-20 minutes or so. He reports there is NO water / coolant in the oil.

To drive this thing confidently for a 1.5hr distance @ highway speeds, is there anything I can do? Here are my ideas:

Pull thermostat out
keep adding water
blast the heater on high the whole way.

Am I risking too much?

I m not a mechanic..just manic...but i wouldnt risk it. If the heads arent already warped they might end up that way.
Even though there is no water in the oil. that could soon be the case also.
I think (someone qualified check this) there is a danget of getting water in a cylinder...then boom.
I had a leaky gasket years ago, what i thought was white smoke turned out to be steam. I was damn lucky

sign up for AAAplus($59.95) and have them tow it(24-Hour Emergency Towing (Up to 100 Miles). You are covered for any vehicle you are in.

We did this for a neighbors car when it wouldn't start in sub-zero weather. Total cost of 146 mile tow was $36 + $59.95(AAA membership) = $95.95. Compared to the $250-350 we were getting quotes for.

I would error on the side of caution and not drive it.

Actually this car will be my daily driver / frankenmotor build. lol. I have various motors lying around to play with and I'll come up with something. Low boost for a while as this will be my first turbo subaru.

Thanks for the interest man.
