Default GM says Camaro supply outstripped by demand, cars selling for over sticker

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/26/r...d-cars-sellin/

Quote:
You want a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro? You'd better come strong with more money than the MSRP requires, and you'd better be willing to wait. Bloomberg is reporting that General Motors can't build the reborn bow tie pony car fast enough to quench public demand. That's excellent news for a company that needs a reason to smile, and it could be even better for dealers donning the bow tie. After all, car sales are still firmly in the tank, and GM has seen more than its fair share of shrunken demand.

Dealers have already booked about 25,000 orders for the Camaro, yet only half have been delivered to date. Analysts reportedly told Bloomberg that dealers are getting $500 over sticker on average, too, and at least one dealer is guessing that he won't have a Camaro to sell in stock for at least a year. Bartow Chevrolet in Florida sold its first two Camaros at MSRP, and he's already booked 18 orders.

There is no question that the Camaro has grabbed the attention of the car-buying public, and the debut of Transformers 2 will likely give the pony car another marketing shot in the arm. GM sold 5,463 copies of the Camaro in May, and we're guessing that number will grow as production ramps up.

$500 over sticker is not too bad. At least it's not as much of a gouging as the gtr got.

Probably because GTR demand is likely to stay high, while this will fall to 5% of current within a month or two.

Ahh.. the SCIC Subaru demographic.. where driving a Subaru is a way to express your individualism.

I don't think anyone is buying a Camaro to be the only person on their block to own a Camaro.

Plenty of Subaru owners will make their car "individual" via modifications - most Camaro owners would be middle aged men going though a mid-life crisis so every Camaro they own would be the same factory stock.

So what's wrong with that? Most people buy a car they like and have no reason to, knowledge of, or care to make it any different. Just b/c you want to take an obscure japanese compact car and make it "fast" is up to you and you alone. If someone want to go out and buy an attractive, seemingly very well put together vehicle from Chevy that harkens back to a different time.... so be it. They WILL sell more camaros this year than Subaru will sell all of its cars combined, I have no doubt.

I was referring to the individualism comment - oh and how is the STi "obscure"? It is based on a rally car - it's like calling the All-trac, the older Evos or the RS200 "obscure".
The real obscure cars are the current Muscle cars as they are a shadow of their former selves from the 60s and 70s.

And I doubt GM will sell more than the 0.5mil Camaros [Subaru's worldwide yearly sales figures] (not unless they start to offer the Camaro outside the USA - and even then I doubt it would sell).

That would have been 67-68, then 69, and 70-72. 68's and 9's were much different.

Wanna guess how many years of planning and reworking went into the current Camaro? Go thumb through a few late 2002 Car and Driver magazines and tell me what you find.

Go ask a hundred people on the street what an STI is, or an Evo, or RS200. Obscure is right.

I think you don't know what obscure means.

Given how I'm right now in the UK that would not really work - as people here are more likely to know an STi, Evo or RS200 compared to an "obscure" American muscle car - and they are obscure seeing as they only ever got sold in one country and the good ones were sold 40 years ago (if I show people a 40 year old muscle car they might recognise it though).

Even back in in the states I would not call the rally cars obscure though - it vastly depends what part of the country you are in then again - good luck having some Ford driving redneck know what an Impreza is.

And lastly, the new muscle cars are obscure - because they do not relate to their name in any way, shape or form.
Look at the Charger ... it has too many doors compared to the 60's one.
Look at the Mustang ... it has lost the sleek look and put on weight; it has lost the slim front end and has a huge bumper; it has lost that nice "bump" the 70's Stang had by the rear wheel arch.
Look at the Camaro ... perhaps the worst offender that has put on so much weight it is impossible to see how it could ever be related to the 70s one.

hot new coupes are always popular the first year. Remember Solstice and Sky, now they can't give them away.

Assuming that is a serious question.

Ford Group B rally car - only ever ran in the WRC for one year as the year after it was introduced Group B was banned.
There were 200 homologation (due to the WRC rules) road going cars built.

rs200 was one bad mofo...i was on the camaro config thing and noticed no white paint option? was hoping to see on in white like the corvette has. and who the hell decided that the new camaro should have 20s standard and 21s and an option? way too huge of a tire for that kind of car.
