Default Diesel VW's

I'm looking at two Golf TDIs right now. An 01 with 75k and an '04 with 93k. I know the '04 is +10 hp and +20 tq, but other than that know nothing really about these cars other than it would be nice to get 50mpg on my 140 mile daily commute.

I've read a few reviews and them seem to be pretty positive but there's always the VW lemons. Anyone have any experience with these cars? Things I should look for?

Thanks

This.

But barring that -- VWs of that era will probably have gremlins. However - the TDI engine will probably outlast everything else on the car.

Stay away from VW automatics. Always something with the transmission and you can't even check the fluid level without a computer.

A stick TDI would be a nice daily driver but budget for some problems here and there (more than you are probably used to).

Just bought the house so moving is not really an option. Plus I live in a nice area and found a sweet job in a crap town. May move closer, but not anytime soon.

edit: they are both manual

I've not seen many Golf TDIs cruising at 140 MPH.

TDI's are ****ing solid. VR6's are what you want to stay away from. expensive replacement parts. but mk4's are pretty reliable, and VW's being lemons, it just depends on the year and previous owner.

Both are one owner with pretty low miles for a tdi. The '01 is at a dealer, but the '04 is a private seller, newer, cheaper, more miles.

My mom has an 05 Jetta TDI, which now has around 75k on it. It's held up pretty well, with one major incident: car was shuddering and losing power in 5th gear. Took it to the VW dealer w/ 500 miles left on the warranty, and they discovered that the flywheel had CRACKED. Amazing. Anyhow, they fixed it for her, but that was a pretty major ****ing problem. Other than that, it's been a great car. 5MT...and yes, momma has been driving stick all her life. I seriously doubt driver abuse caused the problem.

The usual VW electrical gremlins, though when I was looking at one back in the day, after some extensive forum lurking/question asking, they seemed to be screwed together tighter than the garden variety Golfs.

1. The automatics are a ticking time bomb, and are going to run you $4-5K to replace if VW didn't do it under warranty already.
2. The miles are always stupid high on them.
3. Even if the miles are stupid high, they hold their value extremely well, and most places won't wiggle on price due to rarity.
4. Reliability is ultimately going to come down to how good your local dealer is, since certain maintenance items/parts can only be replaced by the dealer from what I gathered. If you have one that doesn't know these cars well, you are entering a world of pain, apparently.

Yeah, these both have relatively low miles and I figure I can put 150k on them over the next 3-4 years and the resale would drop a lot less than if i put that many miles on most other cars.

As for the dealer thing, I guess I'll research some of the local ones.
