Default Is it worth keeping the stock headunit? and road noise issues

I just look through all of the FAQ and most links are dead.

The stereo in my 02 bugeye is bad!!! so this weekend I am doing a few things, sound damping the car, using some ensolite closed cell foam as well.

-I plan on doing the doors, rear fenderwells and the trunk to cut down on road noise, any other recommended locations?

-2 I want to keep costs down so I want to get rid of OEM speakers and run some polk db's on the stock headunit and wire up my FI sub and audison amp for the rear bass. Will the stock unit provide enough power and sound for me cause I want to keep the oem look, but WOW are oem speakers bad!

thanks for the help

On my '08 - I first added an amp and sub, while everyone on this board told me to change out the HU first - as that would make the biggest difference.

The amp and sub on the stock HU lasted about six months, could not take it any more - took everyone's advice, and purchased and installed an aftermarket JVC HU.

I am very happy with the new HU - on stock speakers for now.

I should have listened to the suggestions, and changed out the HU first.

Good luck with your project

Bill

Hey bill would you suggest new speakers or a new head unit first? I just got my 09 and I already hate the radio. I've always liked orion so I would go for their speakers but don't know how they would sound with the stock hu. Its been a good 6 years since ive messed with car audio stuff so I have no idea.

I'm pretty much a noob to this as well. If you read through the first couple of pages on this board - HU comes up quite often.

I installed the sub and amp first - because I had it already from the car I traded in for my '08.

Majority of folks on this board will advise upgrading the HU first - then go from there. I'm sure if you want to upgrade the HU AND the speakers - it would not be a bad thing.

For my tastes in music, and for my needs - my current set up works well. Upgraded HU, with stock speakers - a basic mono amp, and a 10" sub.

Just enough to make me happy - I don't need to play tunes for the neighbour.

Good luck with your project

i didn't bother to read anyone's responses to your issues...but i never understood why you would bother upgrading everything but the hu, in my opinion, the most crucial thing in your system! you spend money on everything but the HU why?

should have replaced that 1st and then build from there. i understand cost cutting but your working backwords. your system will sound much better and give you more control over the sound with an upgraded HU. you could easly spend less than 200 bucks on an HU that will work for you.

when i do it i will have a similar system as you bill. I will probably do alpine or panasonic for a HU as those are my personal favorites and have nothing but good things with them. Then do orion door speakers and an orion 1ohm amp and a single 10 or 12 in sub.
