At the Track Lowes Motor Speedway in A Scooby

What speeds are people hitting in their WRX' s at LMS? I am going to Charlotte this week and want to know what to expect. Its the regular 3/4 oval with infield setup they use for Driver Ed's.
surely i wont be bouncing off the rev limiter?

REALLY!? You're getting to drive Charlotte Motor Speedway on the banking? I didn't know they even did any type of driving events there except the Richard Petty driving experience stuff.

I wouldn't expect the speeds to be too high. I did a ridealong in the Richard Petty thing, and we only did 160 or so. My father-in-law did one of the driving events, and only did 148. I'd wager you won't be getting close to the rev limiter.

At the Track

the only video I could find of this event( previous) was shot in a Mini cooper. it only hit 110mph, but those cars are slow. one person claimed that from entry to exit of the banked oval section is about 1.5 miles, and you can probably flat foot the whole way. I figure if i enter at 40 mph and gun it, I should see 140+.
i guess I will get my answer tomorrow
and yes, I had to dig to find this event, but appeaently NASA - SE makes it an annual event. not just anyone can go, you have to be an upper lever DE student, instructor, or have a racing license. Lowes doesnt event list it on their schedule

I highly doubt you're going to hit 140+, but you may prove me wrong. Like I said, my father-in-law didn't go much above that in a car with much more power, designed for courses like that, with a running start into turn 2, and on race rubber.

I can't wait to see the video, if you shoot something. I'll tell you one thing I know from just riding along in a car..... looking at those big banked turns and walking around on them at some of those car shows DOES NOT do them justice when you're entering one at speed. They're quite intimidating

Have fun at it, man!

I hit just over 140 in my wrx with slicks on. I was there few years ago with the pca. Alot of those cars were going even faster. I do have a few power mods but you can really fly out there if you keep in it.

Have fun out there and be safe

At the Track Been there, done that

OK, I did it.
Lots to say, but I am uploading video to YOUtube right now, which should explain a lot.
First, the high speed banking in turn 3-4 is disorienting at first. I entered at about 140 mph, but lifted at entry, Then I would get back into full trottle about half way through (down to about 125mph). Maybe the car could have held the line, but I felt like it was drifting up to the wall if I tried to flat foot, so I backed off. I am not saying it couldnt be done, but I will admit I dont have the balls to try it. Speaking of my balls, they were in my throat until I entered the front straightaway. Again this is probably due to the G-Forces.
That turn is disorienting because you get all the G-Forces pushing you down, similar to a jet plane takeoff. But you are looking up through the top of the windshied to see "down". And it is hard to ignore that you are turning rather sharply for that speed. Someting in the back of your head says" you need to slow down for this turn", except you really dont. So the whole time you are expecting the car to fly off the track, but it doesn't.
The left front tire howls like a banshee all the way through the turn - and dont forget you are doing ~130mph. And the view straight out the windshild is nothing but wall.
My hands were shaking for an hour after my first run. Lots of adrenaline. And you feel like you just got back from a trip to Mars when you finally get out of the car. (or someplace where the laws of physics dont apply)
Then I just got busy. The car pushes like a pig in the infied section. After driving a Spec Miata for half a season, I really missed being able to rotate the car at will. I even tried a scandenavian flick several times but I just wasnt abrupt enough to make her dance. I recommend to anyone who is doing a lot of track events in their Subaru to install a larger rear sway bar.
As for perspective about NASCAR drivers...those guys aint play'in. That track is fast. Any F-ups are going to be at gnarly speeds, and the G-Forces are tiring.
But overall the Suby is fast out there. I never got passed, and never found the top of 6th gear. At VIR I will hit 135 for a split second before braking on the back straight. but at Lowes i hit higher speeds several times per lap and just kept using the accelerator more, and more, and more.
Stay tuned for the video, I will post the link soon.

I told you! What's even more intimidating and disorienting is looking at the tire marks that go up the banking into a dark tire mark on the wall!

and yeah, I didn't even think about the G Forces. In the NASCAR ridealong, my feet were going numb after 3 laps because with your legs straight out in front of you in that thing, all the blood just leaves you feet. A LOT of people were getting out complaining about their necks after the g-loads on the banking, too.

Anyway, sounds like you had a blast... can't wait to see the video!

yeah, I screwed that up. I assumed that's what he would be driving there since that's his new ride.

The E36 is his old ride, and he has two spec E30's as well.

Nice video X-VWGLX, I like the shaded visor for the camera. That's a lot of the oval being used, NHMS and Pocono don't use anywhere near that much.
