Default WRX vs Mini

I will shortly be buying a new car. I'm torn between the WRX and Mini Cooper S. Before you inform me there's no comparison, I'm an autocrosser and I'm buying this car with the intention to run it in the stock classes, and next year they both run D Stock. I've test driven both cars and can live with and enjoy both as a daily driver. So my question is, why is the WRX better than the Mini? Downside for the Mini: I'm 6'4" and there's no room behind my seat, so it becomes, in effect, a three-seat car. Downside for the WRX: no adjustable shocks available. Make my mind up for me!

There is hardly any room in the mini, so if you ever want to go on vacation or whatever else that requires luggage it becomes a 2 seater basically. You can fit more (4 guys going to LA with 3 full suitcases, a couple pillows and blankets, and two full large backpacks) but nobody will have any room AT ALL. But if storage space isnt an issue the Mini get great MPG as a daily (drove to LA on said trip on one tank and then for the next two days as well). Both cars handle great out of the box, and if you are not planning mods than the Mini is just as capable as a WRX handling wise I think. What suits you better as a daily driver is where the decision lies.

I would say the mini would suite your needs if it was strictly autocross. My drive my girlfriend's Mini convertable non-S sometimes and that alone has a kickass suspension. That and the short wheelbase makes it a really fun car. My only complaint is Im 6'0". The rearview mirror is exactly at my eye level and cant be moved. Ducking everytime Im at a traffic light or trying to read a sign gets old VERY quick.

I love my WRX cause it is an all-around great car. I personally wont ever autoross it stock though because of the suspension, though it is a wagon, but only 100lbs heavier han the sedan.

My $o.o2

just go for what you like. if you're looking for the bigger room, why don't you go get the legacy?? my point is both cars are good looking, just up to the buyer. if is me, of course AWD.

If your buying new I would go with the 09 WRX. Dang near faster than the STi and a better suspension than the 08.
Mini's are great but they really feel underpowered to me, and they are a PIA to work on and $$$ to maintain (thanks BMW)

Make sure to research the huge old tread Sti vs Mini.
This is a tread from 2005 where suddainly a bunch of mini people came on the forum and started to make all kinds of claims.
Then there was a challenge. This guy with the ultimate racing mini (called the mini M9 i think), with racing background, was going to race a local with a stock 05 Sti, somewhere in the mountain roads...
The whole forum kept their fingers crossed...

Then there was follow ups, forum coments and a second challenge:
At the track, same 2 guys...

It reads like an action book, I reccomend..

For autocross its hard to beat the Mini. I constantly surprised/pissed off at the times they can put down. But I do know of 2 local people that got rid of them just for reliabilty issues.

Arrow Height plus Helmet?

If you haven't taken your helmet and sat in each one, do so. I'm ~6' and with my helmet on I don't fit quite comfortably in my WRX (but I have a sunroof). My impression is that the Mini's have more head room but I've never sat in one.

Also, how's the 09 WRX gearbox? One area of disappointment for many (at least in the ~04+ era) is the 5MT (rough, noisy and poor gear ratios, IMHO). Not saying it is not a reason to buy a WRX just something you should consider as you use it every day and it is easy to overlook on a short test drive.

One more thing to consider - since you're running stock class you'll probably be running rcomps, and the WRX hatch has quite a bit of room in it to fit four wheels/tires and all other autocross junk with ease. I know you can fit 4 wheels/tires in a mini, but it gets pretty tight.

ProSolo launch = WRX.
Raining = WRX.
Carrying tires/jack/tools/junk across the country to a Tour/Pro = WRX

Tire cost is similar as the sizes are close, wheels are a tad cheaper for the WRX in the 17x7".

Plus, the Subaru guys are just so much cooler

I currently own a '08 R56 and love the way the car drives at 20% and 100%, and a bit more fun that the WRXs stock for stock. Steering is fast and edgy, brakes feel good, motor has torque everywhere (1500 and up), the car wants to play constantly. As others have said the down fall of the Mini is it's size. For DD it's can be a challenge for me to fit everything I want in the car for big trips to the store or carrying anything of size.

The WRXs have a few flaws from the factory that beg to the fixed such as the soft suspension, horrific tuning, and poor exhaust design. I'm not sure I could drive a stock subaru. Wait? Is that possible? :P The Mini really could be modifed to get more, but I'm *mostly* content with a stockish turbo Mini.

Going for a weekend trip with two people and a large dog. Space is at a premium. Going for a weekend biking trip with a rack, two people, and a dog, forget it.

Has anyone seen a WRX compete in DS nationally other than at a Pro? The WRX probably won't be nationally competitive other than at the Pros. Don't know if that matters to you? Having driven a Mini at the autocross and a stock'ish WRX, the Mini is more adept. Another point would be race tire costs. I'm pretty sure the Mini will be easier on tires than a WRX and have a better chance against the ITR. I'm thinking nationally minded here which may not be what you are thinking.

If I had to pick based 100% on autocrossing in a stock class, Mini all the way. My Mini with a large sunroof weights just under 2600lbs with 1/8 tank of fuel. They go lower than that Picking based on sheer utility of daily driving, '09 WRX wagon with an AccessPort (can be uninstalled to race in stock classes). Come to think of it, I would skip the WRX and get a GRB STi. Good differentials and fat hips make me happy.

Some random thoughts,
Rob

PS. You'll have all kinds of crazies waving at you if you get the Mini.

I stand 6foot1inch and with my helmet on I fit well in both cars. The mini is going to be the car with the advantage. Most of the minis have my wrx by 2 to 3 seconds. If you want to be winner, the mini is the right platform to tackle D stock next year.

^^^ I'm not sure if GS and DS ran in comparable conditions at the 2008 Natls, but the top 3 GS Minis would have been top 3 in DS. Going further down the list, the GS and DS people running in the top 10 had comparable times, putting the Mini on a solid footing with the ITR.

Maybe the 2009 WRX will be a good autox car, but the Mini is a known quantity.

If you are just running locally, for fun, it doesn't really matter.

Plus a WRX with a good driver can be competitive, in DS and not just at the Pro.

2005 WRX driver here.

No '09 WRX's are doing well this year because I am not driving them.

The mini is a better stock class car than a wrx, but then you'd have to drive a mini. The wrx is more practical imo. And just because everyone drives a mini in GS/HS doesn't mean you have to drive one too. There is something cool about having a unique autcross car and not just driving what wins.

I think we're all saying the same thing.

If winning DS is the biggest priority then
1. get skills
2. get a Mini
3. practice a lot
Else
1. get a WRX
2. have fun
End

Koni Sports for the 05+ Legacy fit the WRX with minimal modification in back(enlarging tophat hole). Front inserts fit perfectly. Waiting for mine to arrive from backorder........

different gen for both cars though. And both underwent HUGE changes since that time. WRX moreso than Mini, but a '06 Mini feels like a totally diff car compared to an '05. Might still be a good story though...

I cant believe your putting a wrx in the same category as a mini cooper rice bucket. If your looking for a fun car with a great community, then go subaru. If you wanna drive around in some ugly mini then by all means do it.
