Default Best year of the STI?

Hey all, I'm getting back into Subarus and I'd like to make the right jump this time. I'm selling my Sportbike to start the funding of this project. Now that I have a garage to work on cars and stuff I can pretty much do anything I want.

I cannot justify the cost of the 08/09 STIs right now. Especially brand new from a dealership. I love the look of hawkeyes but their prices are still up there. I've never been a fan of the 04/05 headlights but if the engine/drivetrain are superior then I can get around it.

I don't want this to become a bitch and moan thread or a war over who had the best year. I'd just like to get some facts and personal experiences with the 05s and the 06s. I plan on driving this on a semi regular basis (weekend and nice days) and it will be modded for agressive street driving. My budget depends on how much I can get for my money. I'm looking to spend 22k or less to get started.

Opinions and suggestions are helpful!

Thanks

For the price you're looking to spend you probably have to go with an 04/05 sti. There are minor differences/problems/benefits associated with every year that are detailed on this site. Then again any Sti would be a great starting point as long as the car itself is in good shape.

I had an 05 STi and loved everything about it, even the headlights. From reading a lot of threads it seems that the optimal year was the 06... maybe 07 once the reflash was performed on it. I have seen reasonable mileage, stock 06 STi's in the price range you are looking at. Might as well go with the hawkeye since it is what you want.

+1 GC STI swap FTW!!

To the OP, buy this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1797853

Seriously, I own an '06 STI, but if I had it to do all over again, I would have just bought a GC & swapped in an STI drivetrain, or bought a car like the one in the link I posted above. Just my $.02

For 22k you can easily find a 04/05 STi and most likely have money left over. I would go after the 05 simply because it has stronger hubs more appealing dash but it is up to you.
If you do want a simple project car then the GC shell with a swap might not be a bad idea. I have seen complete projects of this nature that are mind boggling clean go for the 15k range and they will save you on insurance.

04 STI's seem to have "sticking" in the rear suspension and have 5x100, not 5x114, so even though these are small issues, 05 might be an improvement.

gc8 = only option for 2dr sti(after swap and minor exterior mods). Or get a wagon and do the same.

I've been thinking about upgrading to an STI as well. I'm looking primarily at 05's. I prefer the body style over the 06/07's.

But if money were not an object, I have to admit that despite the overall consenus here on NASIOC, I love the 08/09's the best. Black with gold BBS's would be my choice.

GC8 swap = lighter and therefore quicker. But the 04-05's look the best and the 05 interior is pretty solid.

I would go for a 05 or 06....although I never regretted one day in my 04.

There is so much win with this concept, and not just from a performance standpoint.
insurance

Though if I had to choose from stock, either the 05 or 06. Depends on preferred body style. Pignose all the way.

I could sell you my 06 for 21k. 45k miles. completely stock.

as said each year has its ups and downs...but from what i have read the 07 happens to be the best of all with a reflash...not quite a raw as the 04/05...and since it sounds like you are going to be doing reflash type stuff anyways it wont matter much...

that being said you wont find an 07 for 22k...i would sell you mine for $27k...its only has 8500 miles on it

Let me do a bit of math.

Find an older Impreza L - $4K
Buy a parts car - 10K
Misc Parts/Upgrades - 1-2K

If you do all the labor yourself you have can a smog legal GC8 for around 15-16K with all the interior swapped in aswell. Again, many people take about a year to complete the swap, but as you can see the budget is the highlight.
