Default How much smoke for a turbo to be toast?

Well the Forester is smoking at idle when left to idle for more than a min, especially if a cold start. It is not steam from condensation either.

Any application of the throttle will cause a nice cloud of blueish white smoke when parked.

If driven off a bigger cloud of blue smoke trails. It seems though to disappear on the highway although a friend said he though he could see a faint smoke when under boost.

Considering my issues with the exhaust seal leaking externally and smoke rising from the hood scoop I am betting that inside it is starting to give way as well. The dealer never acknowledged it because they couldn't duplicate it even though it happened to me all the time.

I was also informed that a 1qt. burned off out of a 4.2qt engine capacity isn't a lot for 2000 miles.

So to you turbo gurus am I inline for turbo replacement under warranty?

It is an '05 XT with right around 44,000 miles.

Take the intake off of it and see if there is any shaft play. Minimal is ok but if it moves freely it is a goner. Also, since it is smoking, check your coolant for oil and your oil for coolant. Just to make sure, but it sounds like the turbo took a ****.

Oil does not need to be comming from the turbo. It could be leaking valve seals, excessive blow by, the gaps in the rings could be to large, the rings could just be all line, or it could be the turbo.

Like what was said before check for shaft play back and forth and foward and back. Check for oil in the intercooler and in the charge pipe right off the turbo.

Is the oil cloud worse when you first start it?

And oil comsumption spec is still kicking around from the old days for most auto manufactures. So in the books 1 qt. per 2000 miles might be in spec, esp based on driving habbits.

Update:

Thanks for all the info, dealer says turbo is shot. So it looks like a new one under factory warranty for me.

Do you have to break in a new turbo before going full boost?
