Post 2009-2010 Fantasy Football Thread

It's that time again! D&D for jocks! (so I stole the title and opener from Neek. Shoot me) Bought my magazine about a week and a half ago, and might open it up this coming weekend.

Both leagues I am in (1 keeper, 1 fresh draft every year) dont draft for about a month. Feeling confident about my keeper league though, thanks to some shrewd drafting and trading last year. My keepers for that league are shown here: (This is a 16 team league )

3 QBs Brady/_____/_____
2 RBs Slaton/_____
4 WRs Fitzgerald/Calvin Johnson/_____/_____
2 Flexs Chris Johnson/ _____
2 TEs Winslow/_____
2 Ks Longwell/_____
2 Ds Atlanta/_____

Actually cutting Welker as my 3rd WR and hope to get him back in the first round.

This thread is for witty banter involving your separate ff leagues, not the otter league that I missed out on

To gear up for my two drafts, I performed a few mock drafts last night and this morning at http://fantasyfootballcalculator.com/ with some randoms.

Want to have some fun? Bring this subject up in the little chat feature:

(jms = 'unknown')

unknown: surely Im not the only one to draw eerie similarities between ff drafts and the slave auctions from the 1700s and 1800s
Niggy Nig: just grabbing a bunch on nigs
hike!: racist fools huh? how about grabbing these NUTS BIOTCH!
unknown: from a simpleton, I would expect an answer like these
Niggy Nig: It is simple, lots of nigs to be had
hike!: from a racist, I would expect the same...go put your hood on! LOL!
unknown: no, its called picking the best players (slaves) to field a very good team (workers for your fields)
unknown: only difference is, slave traders bred future generations of slaves
unknown: I cant ask Randy Moss to **** Adrian Peterson for future ff players
Niggy Nig: I thought you could come up with something better than than
hike!: than than...you're stumbling fool
unknown: and I thought you could come up with some better than your team name, self-loather
Niggy Nig: do you cut yourself?
unknown: sorry. I'm not a whiny teenage white male
Niggy Nig: maybe you were tit fed a little too long when you were a child?
unknown: keep reaching. Like taking ochocinco in rd 4
Niggy Nig: maybe it was the showers that yourt uncle Joe made you take with him when you slept at his house?
unknown: you are trying too hard. Which is saying something, if I can form an opinion from your team name
Niggy Nig: not much effort at all.
unknown: and WOOOOOOSH goes the joke (albeit factual) over your dumb nappy head
hike!: I wish team #1 came to my draft so I could beat that ass, piss on him and leave him for the dogs!
Niggy Nig: where do yo live? maybe I can make it
hike!: look racist...I will find you Mr. KKK
Niggy Nig: you don't need to go to the trouble. I'll just come to you
unknown: I stand corrected. maybe NN is white after all
hike!: he is
Niggy Nig: That's Mr. Niggy Nig to you
hike!: nn why don't you focus on your poor draft and leave the racist stuff for another site
unknown: did.did...did. you just make a reference to Sidney Poitier?
unknown: I for one, am astonished if theat was your true intention
Niggy Nig: I'm not being racist. I'm not the one who brought up slaves
unknown: sure thing, massa
Niggy Nig: and you all know you a racists too. stop pretending you're not
unknown: sorry, I dont put down people of my own color
unknown: or, white people
Niggy Nig: you're a great person mystery man
hike!: nice pick of Bush BREW
unknown: only to my family and friends
unknown: lead by example

<snip>

unknown: Yeah, I did it. (drafted Vick in the 11th round)
BRU: where does he end up
unknown: doesnt matter. If he goes anywhere, its not a bad pickup for a late pick in seasonal and keeper leagues

<end>

I have about another hour to kill might get in another one.
The one thing I don't like is the uncertainity of the skill these other mock drafters have, or what the scoring is like for their league. Thus, its hit or miss.

Consulting is available that evening!

Threw myself into the fray of another mock draft moments ago:

jms = 'unknown'
(sees the guy drafting 9 right after me is named "no douches please". This pleases jms!)

http://fantasyfootballcalculator.com/draft/522676
predraft banter
Unknown: define: douche
Unknown: Someone who doesnt draft quickly? arrogant jerks? smarmy comments about the players you or others have drafted? or just all around wastes of human flesh?
no douches please: all of the above

Middle of 4th Round
player: unknown, talk about douches, i need an explanation about your draft stratagy
Unknown: sure. You want a top 5 (arguably) QB, trade me a Top 10 WR. With that run of WRs in the first 2 rounds, I changed my strategy.
Unknown: wildcard, bitches
skins: unknown you define at least 2 of your douche explanations donkey
Beers: drafting to trade never works out, that's a known bad strategy... horrible
player: i see your line of thinking but respectivly disagree with it
Unknown: never works out for you perhaps, but I have successfully employed this strategy in the past.
no douches please: Vjax AGonzo might will probably be top 10 wr's
Unknown: besides, what draftable position gets their hands on the ball every play?
skins: dude you only start 1
Beers: and if it's week 7 and Rodgers is still on your bench?
player: you got to be able to play them and unless you start to chubs in your league, dumb
Beers: Royal is a pretty sweet #1 WR
Unknown: yep. QBs are the highest scorers in my league
Unknown: want Rodgers or Brady? Trade for one of them. I have my price, and am happy to keep the other on my bench if it means you cant have him and he is getting none of my opponents points week in and week out
Beers: no I'm good... thanks though
player: i dont even draft two QB's because there will always be one or two on the wire that emerge
Unknown: to be fair, my league requires you to have 2
no douches please: should draft a backup qb, they get hurt all the time. Why not grab a decent backup late just to have?
no douches please: If I knew Barber would fall to me in 3rd I would take two wr's 1ts 2 rounds for sure
player: they have got to get D mason back on the list
.
.
.

Unknown: Remember: Always prepare for the Unknown

So I wanted to start a thread for dialogue about potential sleepers/busts to be on the lookout coming into the draft, but this is a good place to do it. Here's what I think. Comments?

Sleepers (or guys that I think will do better than their projected draft position implies):
-Greg Olsen
-Larry Johnson
-Lee Evans
-Cedric Benson
-Rashard Mendenhall
-Donald Brown

Busts (or people who I think will underperform given their projected draft position)
-Brian Westbrook
-Willis McGahee
-Antonio Bryant

If you're in the league on here and don't want to spoil your strategy, then don't participate. But I'm interested to hear others opinions on fantasy in general.

Westbrook is the one guy who always ends up putting up crazy numbers when he's healthy. You just can't count that guy out.

I think Chad Johnson (Ocho) is poised to have a good come back year.

Knowshon Moreno is going to be a very interesting pick.

I don't think you can list McGahee as an "underperfomer" because he's projected in the 12th round for most drafts I've seen.

Matt Hasselbeck could end up having a very good year and is projected very low among starting QB's.

Lee Evans could be a steal since he's not going to have a constant double team this year.

Roy Williams will probably be the #1 target in Dallas.

Joey Galloway as a Pat could be very interesting if he comes back healthy as well. He was huge in Tampa when he was healthy.

I'm finally starting to get excited about it.

Agreed about Westbrook, but I personally can't justify a top pick for him and his questionable health. But if you do, make sure to pick up LeSean McCoy as a safeguard. I might scoop him up if he's available late.

Yup, I'm already getting anxious...

I don't believe in picking up back-ups in my draft unless there are a ton of draft rounds. Usually those guys are going to be available if an injury does happen, you just have to make sure you're paying attention and swoop them up asap. Like last year I had AP and then essentially wasted a pick with Chester Taylor. Yeah, if AP goes down, it's a great move, but I feel like I can get more value out of a pick drafting a rookie or someone who's going to get playing time if I need them. But again, that's only if you're using the majority of your drafted players. If you have an 8 deep bench or something, then the back-up is the smart play.

I don't follow college ball, so I'm not down with the top rookies expected to play and perform this year.

But certain starters are more susceptible to injury (like Westbrook, or maybe LT, Addai or McGahee) and it's a wise decision to grab their backup before someone else does. Otherwise you'll be left without a decent starter.

Rookie rankings are tough. It's always a crapshoot, but there will be a few gems that are worth the risk. It's just chance that you pick the right one. Here's who I think has a chance to make an impact.

QB:
Stafford and Sanchez are the only two that have potential to start.

RB:
Donald Brown should split carries with Addai and would be the starter if Addai goes down.
Shonn Greene may split with Thomas Jones.
LeSean McCoy is a good bet to get some carries if(when) Westbrook gets hurt.
Knowshon Moreno has a chance to beat out Jordan and Buckhalter for the starting spot if he signs his damn contract.
Chris Wells has a good shot to beat out Hightower as the starter but who knows if Arizona is even going to run the ball much.

WR:
Jeremy Macklin is probably the best rookie receiver situation with McNabb and the rest of the Philly receivers sucking.
Michael Crabtree would obviously be a monster, but it doesn't look like he will be signing any time soon. Be careful.
Percy Harvin will probably start opposite Berrian, but Minn lack of a QB hurts him.
Darrius Hayword-Bay could develop but its risky.

That's all I got for now.

Good stuff. I tend to follow the prospective team depth charts, and this is good info.

Somehow I managed to steal Eddie Royal in Round 16 last year, drafted him purely based on depth chart saying he was going to start at WR2. Hiyo!

Don't expect those numbers out of him this year with effing Kyle Orton at QB.

-Lee Evans (I wouldnt look at him as a sleeper, as he was a decent WR before. With TO on the field, if they go 3 wide with Roscoe Parrish in the slot..thats your sleeper.)
-Cedric Benson (Nice pickup by the Bengals. He has low miles, and can be had cheaply in Rds 7-8 of a 12 team league)
-Rashard Mendenhall (Parker has had a lot of carries the past 4 years)
-Donald Brown (Not really a sleeper, but a wise handcuff for Addai. I like Addai to be healthy but in a RBBC this year)

Busts
-Brian Westbrook (I actually think he will improve this year, but not stay healthy)
-Willis McGahee (3-headed monster in Baltimore. I wouldnt touch that backfield at all)
-Antonio Bryant (Came out of nowhere last year, might see a downturn in his numbers but still be a solid #2 WR to have. And I'm a Tampa fan)

Rookie RBs that jms likes from a keeper league standpoint:

LeSean McCoy (can impact that offense nicely when Westbrook gets broken)
Knowshon Moreno (still has to sign. Wont crack the starting lineup until midseason I think)
Donald Brown (talented college player didnt go against the biggest competition in the Big East. Might struggle a bit against the big boys)
Chris 'Beanie' Wells (already limping. Got beat on in the Big 10, yet should have a good career)
Shonn Greene (might be the end of this year before he gets regular playing time. I can see him pairing with Leon Washington for a nice Jets backfield)

Rookie WRs that jms likes from a keeper league standpoint:

Percy Harvin (get him if you can. reminds me of a more WR-polished Hester)
Jeremy Maclin (has the hands and speed to complement DJax in Philly. Might not be full time starter until later this year though)
Michael Crabtree (if he signs and plays for them this year, he will get action because I dont see SF doing a lot to hold leads late in games)

Rookie QBs that jms likes from a keeper league standpoint:

Stafford
Sanchez
Freeman

(too early to judge how they will perform long term, but worth getting in a keeper league to hold on to)

Whenever possible in a 12+team league, always target for a later round and handcuff your best RB1 or RB2. Take it from a guy who absolutely looooooooooooves stealing handcuffs for the best RBs taken at the top of the first round.

It was a little earlier than I had hoped to have the draft, but thanks to vacations and people being away the commish had to do it last night. With 16teams, getting everyone together was a nightmare.

Everyone kept 8 players, the draft essentially started with Round 9 and went to 17.

9. Percy Harvin WR MIN had to have him. can RB, can WR, can return kicks
10. Donald Brown RB IND targeted LeSean McCoy here, but he was taken 3 picks before me
11. Jerious Norwood RB ATL just in case Michael Turner gets hurt
12. Jeremy Maclin WR PHI rookie WR might have a solid year
13. Michael Vick ?? ??? just to stash on the bench until he comes back, then to trade to someone
14. Byron Leftwich QB TB not bad as a 2nd QB
15. Matt Bryant K TB not bad as a 2nd K
16. Lions D just because I needed a 2nd D
17. Chase Coffman TE CIN liked him in college, should be a good player now that Kelly is out for the year

QBsTom Brady/Byron Leftwich/Michael Vick
RBs Steve Slaton/Donald Brown
WRs Larry Fitzgerald/Calvin Johnson/Percy Harvin/Jeremy Maclin
Flexs Chris Johnson/Jerious Norwood
TEs Kelllen Winslow/Chase Coffman
Ks Ryan Longwell/Matt Bryant
Ds Atlanta/Detroit

And I just realized my QBs with teams and my TEs all have the same bye week Looks like Winslow/Leftwich are not long for my roster.

OK, the drafts have come and gone. Now its time to play a little russian roulette with the guys you have on your roster and decide if you should part ways with one to get the latest 'flavor of the week' on the waiver wire.

I'm torn on who to drop (if any) to pickup Mike Bell. My RBs (start 2) on this roster in a 12 team seasonal league non-PPR are:

Jones-Drew
P. Thomas
Addai
Jamal Lewis
L. McCoy

In order to pickup Bell, I'd have to drop a RB. Only reason I want him is because I'm not sure how long Thomas will be down for. NO plays Philly this week on the road, and Bell has had some good vibes since preseason and last weeks walkover of the Lions.

Do I buy high at his value now for insurance, or just stand pat with what I have?

Drop McCoy. Bell is a clear upgrade because he will get the ball more.

And when Thomas comes back, and Westbrook gets (inevitably) hurt?

Best case scenario is Thomas and Bell split carries while McCoy gets the lions share in Philly. It boils down to whose camp/preseason hype equals more regular season playing time.

14-team all-play league for me. I was high point scorer this week, so I'm 13-0
Feeling pretty good about my team. QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, Flex, Flex, Def (PPR, no kickers).

QB Aaron Rodgers
RB Matt Forte
RB Kevin Smith
WR Larry Fitzgerald
WR Santonio Holmes
WR Santana Moss
TE Kellen Winslow
Def Philadelphia

QB Trent Edwards
RB Fred Taylor
RB Maurice Morris
WR Lavernaeus Coles
WR Robert Meachem
WR Greg Camarillo
WR Nate Washington
Def Miami

With a 14 team league, 16 man roster, and no kickers, the waiver wire is pretty thin. Not too many guys I can go after. Browns RB James Davis, Lions RB Aaron Brown (to backup Kevin Smith; doesn't look like Maurice Morris is going to be it), Bears RB Garrett Wolfe? (to backup Matt Forte now that Kevin Jones is down), Oakland WR Louis Murphy, Pats TE Ben Watson (going to be tough to play in this league).
