Hi,
Just like to know would there be a big difference between using Mobil 1 (5w-30) and Castrol Syntec (0w-30, 5w-30, 5w-50) Which one do you guys prefer? Thanks

I use Mobil 1, and that seems to be the most popular synthetic among Suby owners. I have not tried Castrol though.

Yorick,
The only time I would recommend a 0W-30 would be with our COLD winters, but even then I've been running Mobil 1 5W-30 for the last two winters and I have zero problems cranking over. Keep in mind that even though they are rated the same, at -30C a synthetic will flow much better than a conventional oil. Cheers, MB |

They are all good, don't really matter between Mobil 1 and Castrol. But I heard Catrol is a little better, and FYI, I use Mobil 1 10W-30. Not too cold here

i read somewhere that mobil one screwed up the formula to their new oil called "super synthetic" or something like that. i think they are hydro cracking regular dino oil and call it synthetic. this is what castrol has been doing for years now.

a little off topic but i just changed my tranny fluid last week. I took it to the dealership and i dont know what kind of crap oil they out in there but i had to hold my clutch down for a few second in order to get the syncros going so i could shift without a grind. I decided to put in mobil1 synthetic gear oil. 75w90 i think i cant remember it was what the manuel called for but anyways its better then its ever been feels so smooth. I run mobil 1 oil also 5W30 and i cahnged my oil with the tranny fluid and i bought that new super synthetic formula or whatever and it feels the same as the regular tri synthetic so i dont know but i would suggest chnaging tranny fluid to everyone its one of the bests mods ive ever done also did the rear diff...damn the plugs were hard to get out...Joe

I went to the store today to buy some 15W-50 Mobil 1, and discovered that now it is all labeled Tri-Syn. NOWHERE on the bottle do they say that it is a fully synthetic oil. On the old Mobil 1 bottles, they say proudly on the front that it is a Fully Synthetic Oil. I ended up buying Castrol 5W50, because at least it's still claiming to be fully synthetic. Next time, I think it's going to be time to order some Amsoil or NEO. Virtually 100% humidity, 95 degree temps and $hitty oil do not mix in my mind.

So, noone has mentioned Quaker State, which I've been known to use from time to time, when I'm not using Mobil. Any opinions?

Don't forget to change the rear fluid with synthetic too. I found on my racecar that when it is cold out, regular fluid is way to hard to get up to operating temp. The rear never wants to spin freely when it is under 40 degrees. But with synthetic, the rear spins free right out of the trailer, even on 30 degree days. |

If this wasn't mentioned before, there is new Mobil's SuperSyn sythetic oil coming up. It's been discussed at the General Community Forum here here .
The Mobil's internet page about the product is here . I've been using Mobil's 5W-40 before and sometimes the engine is at winter hard to be spinned by the start motor. It has however started everytime at first try and the hardness of the start can also be related to my car's age. The temperature here moves during the winter between minus 25 degerees to 30 degrees of Celsius. Recently I put in TriSynth 0W-40 and it is very light to start and idles real quietly. Synthetic oils are great ![]() tony |

I assume you are talking about the rear diff when you speak of the rear? In that case, I am still using the factory fluid until my 1st change. |
