Trouble filling up (Gas)

ever since i bought my 02' wrx when i go to fill up at the gas station, and holding the filler nozzle normally i cant pump gas holding the lever 100% open. it will click off, and not let me put gas in. someone told me to try holding the nozzle sideways, and doing that i can fill up my car holding down the lever all the way.

What is the issue here, last time i had my wheels off i gandered up there and nothing seem too out of order.

my beater 93 325i bmw has the same problem from time to time.
One gas station attendant mentioned that theres air in the tank, possibly the gas cap is bad...never really figured it out.
