Thumbs up STi Type RA Turbo-back Exhaust Review

I had an STi Type RA Turbo-back Exhaust (from the STi Type RA Japanese version of the WRX, of course) put on my car saturday, so I've had a couple of days to experience and gather my thoughts on it. The piping is approx. 2.5" and definitely looks like a factory exhaust (shielding all over the place!), comes with one catalytic converter in the downpipe and a resonator a little father downstream. The exhaust is in three sections, downpipe, mid-pipe and axle back muffler section. The tip is about 3-3.5" and emblossed with the STi logo, tip cut at a slight slant.

Sound Impressions:
If you want to keep your car quiet (for whatever reason: sleeper, wife, job, cops) then this is the one for you. The sound is a little deeper at idle but only slightly. You can hear a little bit more noise at WOT but even that is negligble. Apparently the noise reduction comes the the resonator. How the sound changes as the exhaust becomes more "soiled" remains to be seen.

Power Impressions:
There is definitely more breathing room for the engine in the upper RPMs and it is noticeable by the butt-dyno. Car seems to be less "wheezy." However, this is not a BPM/TurboXS 3" turbo back and hence won't give the maximum amount of power gains available for the wrx. And please don't ask for an estimate on power gains, that's the best I can do for you!

Installation Impressions:
I took it to an exhaust shop and it went on lickity-split, no problems. All the hangers were in the right spot, no install issues.
No leaks.

Warranty Impressioins:
None yet, we'll see what my dealer says next time I take it in. However, the back of the muffler, above the tip and somewhat hidden behind the bumper it does say SUBARU, so I figure I'll just point to that if they start raising flags (my dealer is anal!).

Compatibility with aftermarket exhausts:
I don't know if this exhaust will be compatible with other pieces of US aftermarket exhausts (new cat-back, different down-pipe, etc.) or even JDM pieces (like God's downpipe). The key difference I see, is that there are only three pieces as opposed to the 4 on the US stock system. I may look into a different downpipe in the future and will have to do some research but no immediate plans for that.
-Anders

Edit: No other powertrain mods have been done to my car, FYI.
Edit2: No CEL's

Interesting review.. Weasel555 has the TypeRA exhuast too(or is it the STI exhuast?, i think its an RA) i heard it in person and it is as quiet as stock like you described even with his mods..
I was wondering how much you paid, and why you opted for that particular exhuast.. also did you install the headers+upipe as well from an STItypeRA?

Yup, this is almost exactly the same as Weasel's except for a few minor details. On my system the tip is cut at a slight angle and the rear hanger behind the muffler is on the correct USDM side, for some reason his is on the opposite side. I can't explain why this is but its a minor fitment issue fixed at a welding shop or simply with stiffer hangers. And like I said, it is quiet but there is a noticeable power difference.

So far that's my only powertrain modification, I have a godspeed up-pipe sitting in my room for installation when I have time bringing my system to one total cat-con. Although, I think that a Type RA up-pipe would be worth since I don't think that Japan comes with a pre-turbo catcon. Don't know about the manifold.

As far as price goes, all I can say is that it was cheaper than most other after-market turbo-backs available (sub $1100) and its a factory piece, which for me (since I may end up selling the car at the end of the summer) is somewhat important. That said, i'm trying to use as many Subaru, STi, Prodrive pieces as my wallet can handle.
