Default 9.84 @ 131 - Dragster for rent!

Hey guys,

While my 2006 STI is getting some internal upgrades at The Shop here in CT, I had another race opportunity to swing my way.

I got a gift certificate for Doug Foley's Drag Experience School as a gift from the high school youth boys I coached in the Spring. (When I showed up to coach with my 500whp STI, the boys went wild!)

So this afternoon, I drove to Atco NJ with my wife and son and I participated in the course.

This school has a BUNCH of powerful dragsters. All the ones for unlicensed drivers are meant to be ten seconds and over (because of NHRA licensing issues), but 'tis better to ask for forgiveness than permission...

350 chevy small-blocks, with a 2-speed automatic which shifts on it's own at a prescribed RPM. Just punch it and steer!

I had one-on-one instruction with Lee Zane (champion NHRA driver). After one hour of procedures and orientation I suited up.

I was instructed to make a hard smokey burnout out of the water, for two seconds. Then stop and pull to the line. All guided with hand signals.

Here's the vid:

Dang that was cool. All three passes I cut low 1.3 60' times. Out of the 12 or so passes by all the student drivers this day, I had the quickest et. (Not by much. Some chick ran 9.92, so I asked for THAT car!

Here's the proof:

Here's my car's clone (I had DE-2):

They were also doing licensing runs for others with a car that ran under 8.50's. I wanted in....

Anyway, I know it ain't a Subi, but it was Fast and Proven!

That's pretty cool. You know that 9.8 pass at 131 is pretty impressive. The best ET I've seen from an AWD car that traps in the low 130... is 9.97 @ 131 with a 1.4 60ft. I guess is he could somehow manage to get a 1.30 60ft and shift 4 gears as fast as possible... he could get close to that. But we all know a V8 Rail with a powerglide >>> Rally car with close gear ratios as far as drag racing is concern.

Hi Speed,

Yup. Any AWD car that could net that ET from the MPH would be incredible. This is certainly Apples and Oranges in the way it's built and designed.

After it shifts to 2nd at the 250' mark, it runs the entire remaining 1070' in one gear. Not only that, but they govern it somewhere, and methinks that also plays a role.

Nice time!
That two seater is really neat!

PS the two speed transmission is called a Powerglide.

Hi guys,

The package for the day and three runs was $495. My gift was for the 2-run package and was $345. I opted for the three-run pass including the full pass. Best $150 I have spent.

The GM Powerglide has been around since the fifties, Out of production in the late seventies. Yes, it's a 2-speed automatic. At this point it is mostly a generic name, because all the components are remanufactured in the aftermarket to handle higher horsepower. This is the case on these DF cars, and that's why I didn't call them PG as such.

Yes, AMR did the original FMIC install. It's a good unit. What Stu is referring to, is my own recutting of the opening entry to unshield the mount. There was probably 50% of the cooling fins that were not getting airflow. I cut and removed the upper shroud and drew back the lower panel to reveal the fins to airflow. Much better. I did a tidy job. Thanks, Stu!

Give me a month at most. I've been to the track with my STI three times this year already. Mostly heartbreakers, but I keep at it.

Let me tell you, driving an AWD car into the elevens is harder than this dragster. By a long shot.

I would love to feel a 1.3 60 foot. I know a 1.5 feels like an amazing rush but a 1.3 woh!!

I need to see a pic of your bumper, I cut my own and it looks great cause I took my time doing it(almost a whole day), but I also have alot of hidden cooling fins.

Oh BTW does this get you your 9 second license for NHRA/IHRA

Hi Jason,

Funny you mention this. They tune these cars so they are at the cusp of the nines. Apparently they would be treading thin ice by NHRA to allow consistent nine-second passes without a license. They can't help it a good driver sneaks one or two in on the final lap.

Hi Alex,

Thanks. Yup it was. I might do it again. They are going to set a date for the 3-run racers to bracket race each other in the late fall. I could handle that .....
