Go to Story Land in New Hampshire. The kids will love it (at least the 5 yo will) and you are close enough to a lot of nature and hiking.

http://www.storylandnh.com/

It is a very clean and friendly place. All of my friends with kids go at least once a year and they can't wait to go back the following year.

ZMAN's post made me think of something else.

Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, PA. It is such an awesome park. Admission is free, the food is good, and the rides are great. You pay for tickets for the rides. The park is in the middle of nowhere. It's almost as if it is just integrated into the forest. When you are driving up to the park all that you can see is trees with an occasional roller coaster or ferris wheel peeking out above them. You park in a grass field. They also have campsites surrounding the park. It really is a great place for kids.

I all of a sudden hear commercials on the radio for this place and I have no idea where the damn place is and I've lived here for 30 years.

Other ideas:
Dorney Park
Darien Lake
Finger Lakes Region (do wine tours, watkins glen, fishing, camping, etc)
Niagara Falls
Natucket/Martha's Vineyard

Do not come to New York City, unless of course you like to breathe smog and have 2000 other people sharing the sidewalks with you. I would do some outdoor activities, i.e. relax at the beach or lake.

Lake Placid is OK. If you really want quaint, though, go to Vermont.

we ended up going back up to the white mountains since we knew what to expect. we didn't camp, i'm glad in hindsight. my son really likes to be on the ground, he's almost ready to walk...he would have been elbows deep in dirt with a mouthful of rocks if we did.

vacation went like this...

day 1: left late and stayed in hartford, ct for the night...note, every kid in a 350z or RSX drives like a douche.

day 2: drove on to boston...quincy market, boston children's museum...etc.

days 3,4,5: north conway...rained the entire time. railroad, mt. washington, swimming, coffee...etc. skipped storyland since we are going to dutch wonderland tomorrow.

day 6: portland, me...stayed with friends. randomly ran into rachael ray filming a food network show at duckfat. note...she has a big face and is very meh.

day 7: NYC...stayed with friends in brooklyn. ate some good food. subway, natural history museum, central park...killer thunderstorms leaving the city and most of the way home. the turnpike was full of happy mexicans.

next trip will be a little more thoroughly planned. more relaxation...

Hahah...I didn't read...I was totally late. Check out the Great Wolf Lodge for the winter...the place is amazing. They even have hotel rooms with separate little tree house type sleeping arrangements for the kids. They have a couple of locations so see what is closest to you.

I've never heard that before. Is this really a song?
If so, to what tune is it sung?
