Default Element Tuning Takes on Grass Roots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge

The Grass Roots Motorports Ultimate Track Car Challenge (UTTC) is this Friday at VIR (Full Course). I've been invited and will be running the Varsity Shop category. I'll be posting updates from the track on Friday so please check back if you would like to know how practice and the actual competition is going.

So far an overall win isn't looking too good but I hope to uphold the Subaru honor. Here are mostly likely the fastest cars running at this event.

Michael Skeen: Muscle Milk Trans AM series Corvette (Grand AM and Trans AM series driver)

This tube chassis car is no joke and has lapped VIR Full at 1:48. I believe these are 2600 lbs 650 whp cars.

Danny Popp: Corvette Z06 650 HP (Multiple SCCA and NASA championships)

This car finished second overall in the first VIR UTTC. With 650 hp now he should be in the 1:55 range. He has run 1:59 at VIR with just under 400 hp.

Bill Riley: Riley Technologies Track Day Car (Basically a Daytona Prototype with 500-650 HP)

I don't know what this car will run buy DP cars can run 1:46 laps at VIR.

Phil Currin: Dodge Hemi Charger

This car has lapped in the 2:01 range.

Phil Grabow: Element Tuning 2006 "Unlimited" Time Attack STi (you know me)

We have about 600 whp but I have never been able to let this much power loose at VIR. At the Redline event last year our DBW throttle failed but I ran 2;00 in practice with 400 hp. I'm gunning for a 1:56-1:57 this year at 600 hp as we've improved the suspension and aero package on the car.

There will also be a Porsche GT2s, Ferrari 430s, GT500s etc. It's going to be an awesome event. I actually wish I could spectate but I know we'll be very busy!

Stay tuned for updates!

Thanks,
Phil

Thanks guys! This is really going to be a fun event as there is such a huge range of different cars. It's really always fun sharing the track with true race cars like a DP or tube chassis Trans AM car. I have raced against similar cars before and on some tracks I was faster than the Trans AM car and only about 9/10th off the pace of the DP car.

Driver matters most but at VIR it will be a different story as it's extremely high speed where downforce and HP rules. I think if the Riley car has a good DP driver it's going to be in the upper 1:40s.

There might be another car showing up that is capable of mid to high 1:40's as well, a Stohr WF-1. All depends on the health of the engine.

Phil, best of luck! Wish I could help crew for you but I'll be heading straight down to Nashville.

Also the DP pole for this year was in the 1:41's and word has it Riley is bringing in an FIA hot shoe driver

Good Luck Phil!

Running a modified street car against a bunch of race cars makes you the under dog for sure.

Popps traction control and open pipes on the vette makes it sound absolutely crazy.

It's going to be interesting when the slowest car for a given group could be 20 seconds a lap slower than the leader! I believe there are about 40+ cars/drivers and from what I can tell from the list there are going to be plenty of 2:10+ lap cars out there.

This could mean 20 cars in group 1 ranging from let's say 1:41 to 2:10 and group 2 could be 2:11+. I know from experience running that the lead car is going to be lapping the field on the 2nd lap which could mean an inability to get their slicks up to temp before they are in traffic. I think the 1:55-2:00 cars should get 1-2 hot laps before hitting traffic. This could mean some of the fastest cars with slicks might be 3-4 seconds slower (which will still be way faster than everyone else ).

From what I can tell I'm hoping for a top 5 but honestly you can't tell what kind of car is showing up from the entry list. For instance my car is just listed as a 2006 STi and Mike Skeens Trans AM car just says Corvette. I think it's just going to be a really fun event and I can't wait.

Is that a Charger or a Challenger? Says Challenger on the wing and front grill.

Either way, it is bad-ass.

I don't know anything about Dodge cars so I'm sure it's what the big sticker on the wing says.

Best of luck Phil... Leh Keen and I will be there running my DD 08sti. Its a very basic setup with just bolt ons and no aero work. I know we have no chance of winning but are just hoping to beat out some fully built race cars with my daily driver.

Ok today in tech it looks like there will be many more sub 2:00 minute cars than I thought. A couple of Cup cars on slicks, race Vipers, and AIX Extreme winner 700 hp+ mustang (60s body was recently featured in GRM)

I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks

Well I had an awesome time today. I'm quite proud of my 2:11.628 on stock VF39 and minimal bolt ons. I think that put me 12th in class 26th overall. Phil put down some great times and allllmost got into the 1:59's, but ran into trouble. I'll let him tell the story.
