Talking Impreza Owners Save Subaru! Story at 11

SUBARU POSTS BEST MARCH TOTAL SALES SINCE 1986
-- Total Sales Up 2% From March 2000; Impreza Sales Up 77% --

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Apr. 3, 2001 Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA), a pioneer of crossover all-wheel
drive vehicles designed for the active lifestyle, announced today its best March total sales result
since 1986. Bolstered by strong sales of the 2002 Impreza model line, Subaru recorded a sales
total of 14,530 units, a 2% increase from 2000 totals for the same period.

The recently introduced '02 Impreza model line, which includes the turbocharged WRX, helped fuel
total Impreza sales to 2,784 units, a 77% increase from March 2000 figures. Subaru Impreza
sedan and wagon models achieved increases of 236% and 21% respectively. Subaru Legacy
recorded a total of 7,266 units, a decrease of 10% from 2000 totals for the same period. Subaru
Forester achieved a sales total of 4,480 units, also down slightly from March 2000 results of
4,635 units.

"Both the automotive press and consumers are raving about the '02 Impreza model line,
especially the 227 horsepower WRX," said Subaru of America, Inc. Executive Vice President, Fred
Adcock. "In fact, our dealers have been taking orders for WRX sedan and Sport wagon models
since January. Impreza WRX has helped to introduce a new group of performance buyers to the
confidence and control of Subaru All-Wheel Drive."

Well since Subaru's overall sales were up only 2% and Impreza sales were up 77% I think it would be safe to say that SOA would not have made their numbers if it wasn't for the Impreza...no?

I think SOA will be in trouble the same time next year if they don't put that H6 into the Legacy GTs soon. It is currently no match against VW's GL V6 4Motion in terms of performance.

WRC STi

I totally agree, the Flat 6 is an excellent engine and the 165 hp of the EJ25 just isn't enough for such a big car. Besides, everybody is putting sixes in their cars now.

Actually, last time i was at the subaru dealer, BSing with them all, one guy let slip that he'd seen a memo earlier that day talking about the WRX STi, He mentioned they may try to bring it here before the end of 2001. Only about 600 though, one for each dealership.

Now i'm skeptical about that, but the guy had no reason to lie to me, and as I know more about the impreza line than he does i don't think he would, for fear of being caught in said lie, but either way, good news for us, as it means they are thinking good and hard about it coming.

Yep! Great!! I stirred-up another interested Subject at work. She wants a WRX too. I must admit I would have never considered a Subaru if it wasn't for the WRX.

I like the wording,

"...helped fuel Impreza total sales..."

Gas 'er up!

The Japanese are quite concerned about their economy. People are cutting back in fear of further decline. They are catering to the American market. Looks like it's working.

Not to make this another STi post, but I can't help saying that this can't hurt matters. The more press they get over one car, the more the company's name get's on the mouths of the consumer. All Scooby sales should end up higher this year from last and THAT is what's going togive them the inspiration to bring even better cars here. $ talks, ya' know?

A little off the subject, but relevant nontheless. Why would anyone here want the 6 cylinder engine as opposed to the turbo'd legacy motor that is currently available in Japan? Or even the B4 motor? Just thoughts, I would love to see the B4 here in the states, or even the Legacy GTB (I think thats the turbo'd version with 276 hp). I just think that I'd rather have a much lighter engine sitting at the front of my vehicle, although most americans like the idea of bigger displacement engines (but hopefully none on this board).

whiteRex, I share your yearnings for the twin turbos. But most Japanese cars sold here have been americanized. So it seems logical for SOA's marketing dept. to ask FHI to make a H6 Legacy GT. Besides, I don't want 4 CATS in front of my twin turbos

I think the numbers are down on the legacy/forester cause the Impreza is stealing some of those sales, seriously...

whiteRex - it's not why anyone on i-club.com would want the h6 instead of the other motors...but what does the idiotic public in general want?

They won't buy a legacy or wagon that has only 4 cylinders so you need to put 6 in there. After all a Camry, Accord, Taurus, Maxima etc all have 6 cylinders. You just gotta keep up with the Joneses if you want to sell a fair amount of cars.

It's sad but true.
