Default Gasket set for rebuild

I am putting together parts for an overhaul that I am doing to a EJ251 and I have been a bit in awe over the price of a gasket set. Between NAPA and the dealership - they have to piece a complete set together for around $300. WTH?!?!

Then I shop a few venders and see similar prices.

They I try ebay and I am finding complete sets for $70 (shipping included).

Ebay Gasket Set

So has anyone tried these gasket sets and what were the results?

If that picture is actually what you get in the ebay kit, you are missing parts that are included in the OEM kit. I get my kits for around $225 for the turbo models from my dealer iirc.

It will be a pain in the ass if you have to do this again because of a crappy HG. Alot of the little orings are probably of similar quality, but they have to save money somewhere.

Good luck,
-Paddy

I'd go with oem. Like was said above the turbo kits are 225 and they have 4 more gaskets on the exhaust than the NA kit does. I figure the NA kit should be about 40 cheaper just from that.

Also I only use OEM head gaskets. The ones in that picture just don't look right to me.

I was going to get Cometic head gaskets anyways (should have stated that in the original post), but for the rest of the kit is where my question is directed.

I'm not concerned about the turbo exhaust gaskets (heck, I didn't install any turbo gaskets when I added the TD04 to a stock RS - ZERO exhaust leaks for 40k miles), just the engine block gaskets. And for less than $200, it appears that this gasket set paired up with Cometics would fit the bill.

It just seems pricey ($500) to get the gasket set I need from here.

I understood that you didn't have a trubo. I was just saying that the kit for the NA should be cheaper than 225 because it has less gaskets.

Thanks for your info - just checked the price and it looks to be around $225 for a '98 2.5 EJ251.

I found it for 218 but that is still more than I expected. You would certainly be better off just getting the gaskets you need.

Are you doing a full rebuild of the heads and block?

Ebay Gasket Set

I've sed this kit before. Its a cheap way to get a bunch of gaskets for very low cost- Believe it or not, it was more complete than my subaru oem master gasket kit.

The only part I skipped was the head gasket. I still have those lying around. Maybe one day I'll use it for a car I dont really like.. lol

Yeah, I am doing a full rebuild. I picked up a builder 2.5 a couple of months ago (rod knock). The crank and rod #4 were hammered, but the rest of the block and heads were good. I got a crank and rod from Super Rupair (Boulder, CO) and now I am piecing the rest of the parts. The block is getting an overbore (100 mm), recondition the rods, turn the crank. The heads are another chapter. I will splatter the heads to see what they need.

madmax718 - THANKS for chiming in and answering my questions.

I went ahead and ordered the set last week. It got here yesterday and there are plenty of gaskets in there. Now on to figure out piston/rods.

If you compare the lines on the head gaskets it doesn't look like they are very symmetrical

get factory gaskets and be done with it. Your time taking your engine
back out and re-sealing everything is worth the extra cost.

Bummer on the rear main seal...I'll have to quiz the seller about that. The gaskets appear to be decent. The rubber seals have a good feel to them.

In one of my previous post, I stated that I am using cometic head gaskets.

Why won't this gasket set work (beside the fact that I ordered the wrong set)? I've sealed up plenty of other type of motors and transmissions (successfully) with non-factory gasket sets.

So I did the assembly of the engine with the ebay gasket set. The kit was fairly complete - the only thing missing was the 4 half moon gaskets on the heads.

Everything is sealed up and except for a incorrectly installed main seal (my bad) all is good. I would use this gasket set again in a heart beat and save ~$150.
