Rally Stuff WRC Finland July30-Aug2 talk/results spoiler*

Official Website: NesteOilRallyFinland

Entry List Click: Neste Rally of Finland Entry List.pdf

First run in 1951, the Rally of the 1000 Lakes, as it is known, has become one of the most prestigious, and popular, in the calendar.

Finland is known as the spiritual home of rallying, thanks to its abundance of wide, smooth gravel roads - which are perfect for the sport - and the record breaking achievements of its drivers who grew up learning how to drive them flat out.

Names like Vatanen, Gronholm, Makinen, and Kankkunen each learned their craft here before going on to conquer the world - ensuring the WRC drivers' trophy has remained in Finnish hands for 13 years since 1979.

The stages around the host town of Jyvaskyla are the fastest in the championship and have hosted five of the six fastest rallies in WRC history. The 2005 Rally Finland holds the outright record as the fastest rally ever, with an average speed of 122.86kph.

Maintaining these speeds along stages littered with jumps, blind crests and hidden corners requires a highly specialised driving style, combining inch perfect pace notes, the perfect racing line and a huge amount of nerve. Local knowledge counts for a lot in Finland, to the extent that only seven non-Finns have won the rally in 58 years.

Despite the mind-bending speeds the hard-packed roads Finland is not mechanically tough on cars. Instead, the challenge is purely about top speed and skill behind the wheel. With pines trees lining much of the route, errors rarely go unpunished, so the stakes are high. For most rally drivers, however, the challenge is addictive and victory in Finland is seen as the ultimate WRC prize.

Sebastien Loeb:
"The way things stand at the moment, it's hard to have a totally free mind, but I feel quite relaxed going to round nine in the championship. It would clearly be more comfortable if we had a lead of, say, 20 points [in the drivers' championship]. That said, we were only three points clear of Mikko before last year's visit. This time, the gap is even narrower, and there are only four more rallies to come this season. As I see it, it's as though the championship will be beginning afresh in Finland, and our only option will be to attack. We will have no other alternative. Our C4 WRC is improving through detail changes at the moment and I know it is competitive on this event. Last year, I had every confidence in my car and that enabled me to push hard from start to finish. It turned out to be a very close fight, and the gap at the finish was less than 10 seconds. If we want to win again this time round, we will need to repeat the same sort of pace."

Mikko Hirvonen:
"The view I'm taking is that the season is now a mini-four round championship with three rallies on gravel and one on asphalt. I'm leading by a point so the outcome is in my own hands. First in the start order for the opening leg isn't the easiest position to be, but I'll have to deal with that. I lost the rally last year by dropping time from the same position on the opening leg so I need to overcome that. The time differences on this rally are always so small. If a driver wins a stage by five seconds then that's a huge gap, so even a small mistake can prove costly. And the speeds are so high that a big mistake often results in an accident. When you're flat out and fighting hard for tenths of a second, you often find surprises on jumps or corners that you think you know well. The car can fly further or higher and those are the kind of surprises that can bring problems."

I'd like to see Loeb show up the Finns on their home turf again. With the one tarmac event still remaining, it would be a crushing blow to the Fords.

Kimi Raikkonen will make his debut in the World Rally Championship this week, when he takes in the Neste Oil Rally Finland, one of the fastest and oldest events on the WRC schedule.

The Finn, who took the runners-up spot in Hungary on Sunday, finishing 11.5 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton's McLaren-Mercedes, will swap his Ferrari F1 car for a Fiat Grande Punto Super 2000 - the same spec car as will be driven by Anton Alen.

Raikkonen will be co-driven by the experienced Kaj Lindstrom, who formerly partnered multiple world champion Tommi Makinen and while he may be a WRC virgin, he will at least be familiar with his mount having driven the Grande Punto on his previous rally outings at national level.

Furthermore while his most recent rally outing, an asphalt debut in Italy was cut short by a mechanical problem, the 29-year old does have two other events under his belt.

"I think it will be a completely different thing [to anything I have done before]. I have done a few rallies but it is like club races compared to the Rally Finland," said Raikkonen prior to last weekend's F1 race at the Hungaroring.

"I will just go there and have fun and hopefully we are going to make it to the end. That would be nice."

Finland! yea! time to start paying attention to wrc again

Hope its a good one, I've been slacking off and not paying any attention this year

Isn't Atkinson driving in this event? (forgive me it this is completely obvious or has already been discussed ad nauseum)

Last I heard, Atko was trying to gain sponsorship to run in Australia. Don't think he really has a ride right now, though he was hanging around with Ken Block a few weeks ago...

Thanks, that would be cool if somehow DC/Ken had the money to sponsor Atko, although highly unlikely

Citroen's Sebastien Loeb led the way on Thursday morning in the shakedown for the Neste Oil Rally Finland, the ninth round in the 2009 World Rally Championship.

Loeb completed the 3.76 kilometre test stage in Laajavuori, 6 kilometres from the service area, in 2 minutes 2.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds up on Petter Solberg, who was 'best of the rest' in his privately entered Citroen Xsara WRC.

Loeb set his fastest effort on his fourth and final run through the test: "I think I have to fight again for the win here because we lost our lead in the [drivers' championship on the] last rallies due to some problems," said the Frenchman. "Now we are one point behind and we have to be really concentrated.

"I remember last year in Finland we had a big battle with Mikko [Hirvonen] and maybe it can be the same again this year. To fight for the win here though is not easy. You have to have a good feeling with the car and you have to be completely confident in the pace-notes and everything. We will see. I hope to be able to fight for the victory."

Petter 2nd in shakedown huh? Good to see.

Sorry, I'm not going to hope that Loeb takes another win like some of the rest of you. Loeb's won enough back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Gimme some good competition and a variance in winners. Nobody wants to see the Loebs and Schumachers of the racing world win every day.

Go Skoda! Hänninen and Alen are leading the Grp N cars. It's just a shame that Skoda's main team isn't at Madeira (also running this weekend) and FIAT thinks Alen's a better draw in his home country than a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, especially since it's all pavement.

Pretty decent showing from Kimi Räikkönen thus far. 17th is respectable for someone that's never completed a rally on gravel before.

BP Ford Abu Dhabi team leader Mikko Hirvonen has ended day one of the Neste Oil Rally Finland at the top of the leaderboard after a close duel with championship rival Sebastien Loeb.

Hirvonen, who was third fastest on Thursday night in the Killeri super special, took the lead in the first 'proper' test - 2.9 seconds up on Loeb. The Finn then topped the times again in Kruununpera 1 to increase his advantage to 7.1 seconds.

In the next two stages though Hirvonen was 'only' third and second fastest and with Loeb winning both SS4 and SS5, the Ford man saw his lead cut to 3.6 seconds heading into the mid-day service at Jyvaskyla.

The afternoon loop saw all four of the morning's tests repeated and it was very much a case of déjà-vu, with Hirvonen again quickest in Jukojarvi and Kruununpera, before Loeb responded in Mokkipera and Palsankyla. As a result while Hirvonen initially increased his cushion to 5.2 seconds post-SS6 and then 7.6 seconds post-SS7, the margin came back down in SS8 and SS9.

Hirvonen thus looks likely to take a slender lead into the second day, as only the short Killeri SSS, which will get underway at 20.00 hours, remains to be run.

Henning & Petters issues:
Stobart Ford's Henning Solberg has retired from day two of the Neste Oil Rally Finland in the second stage of the day.

Henning had made a good start to the second leg by overhauling Matti Rantanen and moving up to fifth in SS11.

However around 10 kilometres into SS12 his challenge was brought to a halt when he sustained damage to the front suspension at a slow hairpin corner. This resulted in the driveshaft coming loose, leaving the car with no drive and forcing the Norwegian out of the day's action.

"I am really disappointed to be out today," said Henning. "Things had been going really well this morning and we had moved ahead of Rantanen on the first stage which was one of my main goals for the day.

"The suspension broke at a slow hairpin corner and the damage was just too bad to continue. I hope that we will be able to return tomorrow and SupeRally but the team will have to assess the car first."

Meanwhile Henning's brother, Petter, also had problems this morning after re-starting under the SupeRally. 'Hollywood' reported that his privately-run Citroen Xsara WRC was down on power after SS11 and he then had a suspension mount break in SS13.

"The engine is not working very well this morning and I don't know why," Petter confirmed. "The suspension mount broke through the bonnet in the last stage too so it's not looking very clever. We just have to get the car fixed ready in time for Spain now."

"When Petter went out first thing this morning, he reported that the engine felt like it had lost 20 per cent of its power," added Ken Rees, team manager for the Petter Solberg World Rally Team. "We do not know what it is yet and we are investigating it in this service.

"We have sponsors here as guests but if we cannot resolve the problem it is quite unlikely that Petter will go out in the next stages. Essentially there is no power and there is also little drive and motivation.

"He had to start 74th under the SupeRally format this morning and went quite well, actually setting a fifth fastest time. But then the right hand suspension top mount failed when he clipped a rock. Putting a temporary repair cost him 1 minute 30 seconds on the last stage and that effectively was that."

Someone needs to tell Novikov that a) this isn't a PS3 and 2) the throttle is more than just an on-off switch.

Very good to see Latvala coming back strong after the outcome of Poland - that appeared to have really shaken him up.

Kimi rolling was a bit of a letdown - I was hoping he'd make some kind of decent finish. Anyone know where he was running before the crash?

Lastly, I'm ecstatic to see people just plain overpowering Loeb and getting past him. Time for someone else to win round after round!

Wow... Mikko is pulling away from Loeb. I can't wait to hear Sebbie's interviews.
