speeding up the faster you go is good info but we're going to need a lot more than that - it could be anything from tire noise to brake noise to wheel bearing to diff to... etc.

o is it the same in every gear or different?

o is it better or worse when cornering? and if so left or right?

o what are your tire pressures? how does your tire wear look?

o does it change at all if you gently 'ride' the brake pedal?

can hear it while going straight, not sure how to explain it, tires are new, it kinda sounds like a rumble but i doubt its from the exhaust cause its stock, there is no shaking in the car. best to explain i guess without hearing it is that the faster the rear wheels go the more rapid the rumple/pulse is.

does the steering wheel shake at higher speeds? that would indicate an inproper balance...I ham having a similar noise and have searched all over with a few conclusions...
a.rear diff bearing (side or pinion)
b. wheel bearing(s)
c.low/dirty fluid
d.?!?!?!?!??!

just some background...the noise is comming from the rear of the car, it is totally wheel speed/veh. speed dependant. The noise can be described as a low pitched humming or vibration. Sounds like i am running on mud tires or a flat spot.wuh wuh wuh and gets faster as i go faster. I can hear the noise almost at any speed really noticeable at 20+mph...just gets faster untill its almost a harmonic vibration...feel it a little in my foot...

'03 WRX 77kmiles....I had my rear diff changed about 30k ago,(and my tranny/clutch/flywheel) just had new tires mounted and blanced by a very reputable shop, did the 'wiggle' test with no result, when the car was in the air with the tires spinning the tech. said it was definately a diff noise...
will post updates as they come

UPDATE:
Literally JUST replaced rear fluid....no large metal shards and fluid looked pretty clean...Drove around the block and there was no change in noise at all...not better, not worse...i looked at the teeth through the fil/drain hole and they were in excellent shap for what i could see...oh yea I put Roal Purple in....after a search i found that there haven't been any complaints in the rear diff...but yea..also felt around for hotter spots around the bearing locations with no results....frikkin stumped...

GURU'S PLEASE ANSWER TWO QUESTIONs...if a bearing in the diff had failed, wouldnt there be at least some obvious signs as far a metal chunks or at least some major build up? Also if I changed the fluid, should'nt there be a difference in noise?
thanks in advance....

Heading back out to the garage to pull the wheels and see if anything is noticably wrong...again...

not sure if we're talking about the right thing but i have a problem on my 05 when at 50-65mph i hear a humming noise, found out there's a tsb on it from the dealer ship what they do is put new updated dampener mounts on the rear diff to absorb the noise but again i might be thinking different

uncle scotty: thanks for the input...definately keep that in mind next fluid change...

Well I had her in the air this afternoon and put into 4th to get a decent speed...and i definately herd a noise comming from the front of the diff...right behind the companion flange and driveshaft..sounds like a grinding/slapping...

after research i found it may be a few things.
-bad pilot bearing
-bad pinion bearing (front)

the parts are about $70 but i was wondering if you could do this with the diff/axles on the car...i'm sure I could use a puller to get the bearing off but does anyone know if it needs to be pressed on...and if you can do it without removing the diff....any help is much appriciated!!
