Subaru Stars New Member with fuel trouble

Greetings fellow Subaru members,
My lit'l "Roo" is not running. I had a friend replace the fuel pump and she ran for a day and then just crank. Roo is a 1993 impreza L with 164k on her.
Love the car but need the help of fellow experts. I was told to check the fuel pump relay or fuses. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help, In advance...
John in NY

How do you know it's a fuel issue? Did you remove a line from the fuel system and get no gas out?

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Has the car been sitting a long time, is there water in the fuel?

Did you check for spark?

Help us out a bit so we can help you out.

Subaru Stars Response

Thank you Charlie, The car did sit idle for quite a long time. I was driving home from work and the car died in my driveway. I replaced the fuel pump and it ran fine for a day but then the same problem. I have checked the fuse, relay and now I am checking the grounds. The filter was clean but I may have kicked up some dirt in the line by changing the pump. Next I was told to check grounds and clean them up.

Thank you for the expert advice..any other shoot me a response. Another fellow "subbie" suggested I check codes? What are these? Any other help greatly appreciated. This forum is great and assists dedicated Subaru owners...again thanks....John

Subaru Stars In addition

Charlie,

Later the pump that came out was tested and worked. Does that tell you that the ground may be off or the line not working since the pump doesn't send fuel to the front of the car?

Thanks again Charlie,

Loyal Impreza , John

It may be stale gas, or water in the tank.

I believe you still have a fuel filter in the engine compartment, drivers side, on the strut tower.
Maybe pull the outlet hose off the filter and run the fuel pump. Collect the fuel in a clear container, check for water. Hint, water will settle to the bottom, fuel on top.

We must rule out the simple stuff before we rocommend spending money.

As to checking codes, your's is an OBD-1 ECU system, there are places to tell you how to check/look for trouble codes. Frankly, I forget off the top of my head.

Subaru Stars Mr Charlie Thanks for your help

Mr Charlie, Great thanks to you sir, after a friend of my father-in laws checked and saw that the fuel pump connector was aching in the connection. Making the fuel pump work and not work.

Nobody seems to sell only the connector so a new fuel pump with the new wire connector, and screen is on its way unless you know of a place that sells only wires of this sort??

Your expertice sure helped... thanks..John and his lit'l "roo"

Glad you have it figured out. As to getting parts, not sure what your fuel pump looks like, so I can't really answer your question.

I would try www.RockAuto.com before going to a dealer.
