Default Possible O2 sensor out?

our '92 Lagacy is having a hard time starting and idling. There's smoke comming out of the tail pipe. Could this be a possible O2 sensor that's out?

BTW, the engine check light is on also.

Thanks!
FuJi

What color smoke is it? I would do a completed tune-up of the car and see if that cures it.

If the smoke is blue, it could be a failed pcv valve.

If the smoke is black, you're probably running rich.

If the smoke is white, RUN!. You're car is going to blow up. Probably an oil leak somewhere.

Try changing your spark plugs.

lets see.......there's no more smoke. (i think it had smoke because of the unburned oil from trying to start the car)

More info.
it has a hard time starting. And when it does get up and running, it'll idles for about 2-3 seconds and then it'll die.

Anymore possible clues? Bad spark plug wires? something?

The car is running now but the CE light is still on. i might have to do some looking around. maybe might have to check the O2 sensor on the intake piping........the sensors on the exhaust system...

Thanks for the input!

I havn't check the O2 sensor yet but i've reset the ECU by unpluggin the battery. The CEL died for about a week now and it came back on.

What happened was my fater put some fuel system cleaning fluid in the Legacy and that cause the CEL.

What do you guys think? I seriously have to take a look at the O2 sensor in the intake pipe.

Thanks!

Does the legacy use the OBD scanner?? If you have an Autozone around you, they can pull the code for you. If you don't have an autozone, try calling some local parts stores and see if they can do it. MOST will do it for free.

Your can persuade your car's ECU to flash you the trouble code, but only if you can read the attached picture, which is grainy due to the 51200 byte i-Club forum restriction on attachment size.

an update

The car started up as is with trouble. When stepping on the gas, the car struggled. Burning rich because of smell.

Then.........

we've taken the O2 sensor out. It had white stuff on it. We bought a new O2 sensor and reset the ECU. Car started up great! will wait for next CEL if it comes up again.

Other than that, CEL is gone for now.

Thanks for the pic Jon [in CT]
