Default 2012 BMW 3 Series To Get 3-Cylinder Engine

Quote:
AS ITS MOST popular model, BMWís 3 Series generates plenty of interest whenever a new model is set to debut. With the next generation due in 2012, itís no surprise that unconfirmed reports about the carís details are now beginning to circulate.

Not surprisingly, the lines of the new car are reported to borrow heavily from the latest 7 Series and concept CS to deliver a look that is less-polarising than the current car.

Tightening emissions and fuel consumption regulations are expected to see the 3 Series debut with a three-cylinder turbocharged engine. Power is expected to be somewhere between 110 to 125 kW with torque figures of around 200 to 300 Nm.

As part of BMWís EfficientDynamics technologies, the new car will feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, wind-cheating aerodynamics, on-demand electronics and more efficient heating and cooling systems.

One of the new EfficientDynamics features will be an aerodynamic Ďair curtainí. A series of ducts and vents around the bodywork will direct air more cleanly around high-drag areas, such as the carís wheel wells.

The carís construction will benefit from the used of advanced materials and lightweight metals such as aluminum to keep weight to a minimum.

BMW is also looking to cut manufacturing costs for the new model. Whether BMW will offer lower specification versions of the new 3 Series is not yet clear, but the aim is to maximise production volumes without increasing cost.

Also under consideration is a slightly less-complex version of the hybrid drive system set to debut in the 7 Series and X6. While BMW already has a range of fuel-efficient diesel engines on offer, the hybrid option is expected to be aimed primarily at the US market, where diesel take-up rates are lower than in Europe.

One thing BMW will work hard to maintain is the on-road dynamics the brand is renowned for.

Unless they have excellent programming for that 8 speed auto, it will suck donkey balls driving that thing.

125 kW is 170 HP, which is about the same power that a 1990s BMW 325i 6-cylinder had.

If this car can be anywhere near the 2900 lb weight of that old model, then I don't see the problem. Also, this 3 cylinder would be the base engine - back in 1990, that was the only engine offered.

But that was the only engine in the US.

Europe had 4-cylinder options, as did we for some model years.

Not to mention the E30 M3 with the then OMG 190hp 4-banger (or as much as 238hp in europe)

thats a good point. Low weight + decent power will make this car plenty quick. the 8 speed auto sounds horrible however.

BMW sells a 320i with 170 hp in Europe, 0-60 in ~7.4 sec. Perfectly adequate imho. A turbo 3-cyl with the same peak output would have more area under the curve and be even quicker, if they don't make it much heavier than the current model.

Default Bmw planning to reinvent the 3-Series

Quote:
An official voice from BMW has recently declared that the company is planning to reinvent its 3-Series range and to orient the next generation into premium products, translated in environmental friendly vehicles. One of the mail goals of the new positioning of BMW brand is to retire from Formula One by the end of the year. The next generation 3-Series is scheduled for the official reveal no sooner than 2011, at the Paris motor show. The new versions will pioneer the automotive market with the introduction of the 3-cylinder engines and will show a class-leading aerodynamic looks. Major upgrades and modifies will be made also at the electronic part: a new climate control system will be completely reconstructed using a new technology and the engineers are planning to finalise the new Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving technology to stand for its new environmental militant statement. In some years we will probably witness the complete electrification of the new 3-Series.
